Heh. Yes I'm home. Just beat the snow at teatime.Thanks all for the suggestions. I decided not to risk butchers' row so I have come home stand pie-less. These poor souls in the northeast will have to wait another year and I'm vowing to order online from Wilsons in plenty of time. I might take pity on them and distribute slices on the Millennium Bridge. For a small fee. And if I can get some Mather's Black Beer I might have the beginnings of a small enterprise.

So Sorry G.E., Just spotted yr Stand pie postand realise that you are once more back in exile! For what it's worth, Ainsley's bakers were taken overby Coopland's last year sometime! They've been trying to outdoGreggs, by giving away free pasties etc all last week. A YEP promo of course. "Take this voucher to a Coopland'sbranch and get a Freebie!" Most of the old Ainslie's shops are nowCooplands. There's one on the Headrow just above Gregg's!Whether they still do Stand Pies I don't know. I sit corrected Ian, i knew it was one or t'other. Was there also a butchers that did excellent pies (now closed i think) next to Kwik fit, across the road from the Rose & Crown?.Being a shade over 12 st, i am trying to lose a bit but that pile o pies looks irresistable

Hi Keg,You are correct. The shop was called Ye Old Pork Shop and it is situated opposite the Rose and Crown on Bondgate, near to Kwik Fit. It has been closed down for several years and the shop remains empty. Like many butchers shops, the proprietors kept the place immaculate, worked all hours cleaning, and sold great meat and pies, but the the Health Inspectors found something and prosecuted them under the Hygiene Regulations, trade was lost and the shop closed down. It is a shame as, like Newtons on Kirkstall Road, in Leeds, it was a great shop but never recovered so now we have another empty shop. Ian

For the past few years I've got my Xmas stand pie in Skipton. Stanforth's opposite the Castle pub. Superb!

For superb pork pies, stand pies and game pies try Wards butchers in Taddy next to the Leeds Arms, all pies are made on the premisis and while traveling home eat a sausage roll there great.Sounds like an advert, but the meat is all locally reared and reasonable in cost, we travel there regular to stock the freezer.

I know its too late now but the shop that supplies Wilsons of Crossgates pies is on Great George Street and it is called BRILL,its right opposite the old Infirmary as you would walk to Clarendon Bridge.
