OK Joshua was born in Birkenshaw but I don't know about the son, though surely he counts as a 'Famous Sons of Leeds'. Well I'll drink to that! Well he won't be a Loiner for much longer. I've stopped drinking their beers on principal (ok I relented when I found they had cask mild in the "Top 'oil") but that's my only sin of backsliding. There is a sign in the window of the Scabby Taps that says "We sell Taylors beers - and they now outsell Tetleys. A sign of the slow decline?" or words to that effect. That tells you all you need to know. Well I know it's not from Leeds but Taylors Landlord takes some beating. Daleside Legover's pretty decent. I'm not sure whether Rudgate (just outside Wetherby) is in Leeds or N. Yorks. Leeds Best is great. I'm also quite partial to Ossett Excelsior. All compare very favourably with Tetleys Bitter, I know it sounds like sour grapes (it might even taste like them too) but I reckon the quality of Tetleys Bitter is nothing like it was 20 years ago.

Don't know if this one has appeared on Secret Leeds before. William Gray, 1787-1848 doesn't actually seem to be famous - but he ought to be for his far-sightedness and appreciation of the future possibilities of railways. I must admit to having never heard of him before today. Google his name and dates and see if you agree that he deserves a rather larger footnote in history, particularly as he was born and brought up in Leeds, and his ideas sprang from his early witnessing of the Blenkinsop/Murray locomotives on the Middleton Railway.
