Apparently "100 additional carriages" sometime in the future, split over the entire North of the country. Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, etc.So, not a great deal then.

And the metro in Merseyside - Merseyrail - effectively an underground and suburban rail system that puts anything around here to shame.

Merseyrail, like Newcastle's Metro, has a past though, and the infrastructure is there to be upgraded. Our area's attitude to rail can best be shown by the Ilkley and Skipton lines, which were being run down 15 years ago. Arguably their renovation has contributed enormously to the growth of the region, but they wouldn't have happened without public campaigning.

Right I can speak first hand on Miseryrail. Old York built 3 car trains on 750V DC lines. There are only just enough to cover the services and try getting on in the centre from 4pm and going to Southport. As crowded as any Northern Line route to Skipton or Harrogate. The extra carriages are either stock presently in storage from Southern regions or some airy fairy idea of a new build. The stored stock will have to be rebuilt to be able to be used. So don't hold your breathe for new stuff.Electrification ie. over head catenary, will be done on the cheap as per East Coast mainline and unless new lines are built the speed limits will be the same. It just means lighter trains so possibly longer ones. However, this again will be years and technical issues with tunnels will not help on the Trans-Pennine routes.Whilst HS2 has Deutche Bahn running trains to Germany in a few hours. East Coast services don't even have a clear decision on whether a follow on from Class 91 MkIV coaches yet. Hitachi are holding back on building a factory. Any one will a brain cell knows that railways are great for an economy. Just look at the continent, but as we are stuck with the American idea's on economic development, their railways are in a worse state, Great Britain will grind along to the car..Rant over. Breathe, breathe..

At least Mersey Rail somehow managed to foist those appalling 142's onto the unsuspecting folk of West Yorkshire - you know the ones with the rows of seats so close together that you can barely sit down. And they've now been revinyled so you can't even spot them until your on board!
