Gritting in the Leeds area.

At the moment (18:46ish) there is a very clear night sky (at least where I am in Leeds) with a nice just over half Moon out, with the bright object a little to its left being the planet Jupiter. With a clear sky it is no surprise that there may be a frost but I would not have expected the gritters to be out, so they must know something.

There have been two past here within the last half hour - and will probably be more to come. They were out overnight a couple of nights last week - I didn't actually see the gritters but the evidence they'd been past was all over the road in the morning. We're quite fortunate in that respect as we're less than half a mile as the crow flies from one of the yards where the gritters are based, we're on 3 major bus routes and have a fire station at the end of the street, so we always seem to be well served by the gritters. That said, if it's anything like this morning I'll have a stubborn sheet of ice to shift off the car windows at 6am tomorrow...

One great advantage of being retired is that I can now look out on frosty mornings and know that I can go back to a warm bed without needing to go out to defrost the car. Sheer bliss. You have my sympathy raveydavey.

They know that when it's a clear night and it's been raining or the roads are wet,ice forms. We grit when the Road SurfaceTemperature can fall to zero.

I started that thread purely as a way of letting users know that there was a possibility of ice on the roads this morning(monday)LCC do not have any updates on their website regarding when roads are gritted,it was my intention to keep users regularly updated, obviously they would have to be viewing this site. The weather forecasters will tell you when it is going to be icy,you normally find that out for yourself when your on your backside.Thismay seem pointless to some,Why do we need someone to tell us the Gritters are out/will be out?Last year 2 radio stations in Leeds reported on more than one occasion that they had seen the Gritters out without contacting LCC.What they had actually seen were Gritters with SAND on that were attending oil spills at accidents involving motor vehicles which had absolutely nothing to do with weather conditions. Now I know an audience on here is possibly only around 60 or 70 users who may or may not drive early morning but I can honestly say my intentions were sincere. However I see your point as regards trivial postings and trivial answers I therefore apologise and would ask the moderators to remove this thread as soon as they see fit.

I don't know who has been complaining(?), but I thank you for the warning (I'd always rather have two warnings than one accident).
