You're not alone i hear it quite often too (and it drives me mad!). It's hard to describe but the best I can say is it's like a low humming sound, it always makes me think it's coming from something electrical in the house !! Just found this article http://www.environmental-protection.org ... ncy-noise/

Just found this article http://www.environmental-protection.org ... ncy-noise/ There is alao the natural phenomenon of Earth Hum. This is very-low frequency noise produced by the earth itself, thought to eminate primarily from sea areas. With this, the frequency is so low I gather it is more sensed and felt rather than heard.

This phenomenon has been discussed in Earth mysteries and Fortean Circles for a long time where it is known as the HUMMADRUZ a word coined by John Billingsley editor of Northern Earth magazine after he experienced it himself in the 1970's and began to investigate. Many of the sources already referred to have been blamed but there are accounts of it in pre radio days as well.see:http://www.northernearth.co.uk/permhum.htm
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!

I remember this noise from the 70's. It seemed to stop sometime in the mid eighties. I've always wondered what it was, and where it came from.I used to live at Boggart Hill, Seacroft. Every half hour, or possibly an hour you would hear one single big 'BOOM' I think it only happened Mon-Fri.It seemed to come from the Cross Green area. You could tell it was some distance away. I can only describe it sounding like a full skip been dropped on the floor from some height BOOM!Anyone else hear that?
My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!

Sorry to upset some people about this but my theory is maybe millitary. I live close to Church Fenton and have recently been on holliday to Cornwall next to st Mawgan (i think thats what they call it). On both occasions i have had the HUM its around 2-5 hrtz. You cannot get away from it and it also resonates through buildings and your body. Thus if you put your head under the pillow you will still hear it. Yes it does [edited for content] me off. Power to generate this problem must be ramped / boosted up radar. Just my idea on the problem though.

When we went to school on dark mornings we could see several strange glowing lights from Cross GreenEventually found out it was the marshalling yard for the railway.I don't recall the intermittent boom......But it would be nice to think it was the ghost of the forge hammer at Foundry Mill....

The BOOM heard, probably came from the Imperial Metal Industries plant, which was commonly known as the "Yorkshire Copper Works", a couple of days a week they expanded copper ingots by inserting a controlled explosive charge inside the ingots, thus starting the process of making copper tubing. The explosions were carried out in a large field that lay to the north west of the plant, near Knostrop sewerage works.

That most probably comes from thr mechanical side of the instalationThe resonance caused a frequency of 7Hz is disruptive to living tissue - stong enough, it can destroy - once researched as a weapon I believe. Not sure how you would operate such a device and remain unaffected though! The last BOOM from Skelton Grange was some 20 years or so ago wasn't it? The one from when they blew up (down!) the cooling towers
