There was a football pitch on the farm field at the Wakelfield Road end of Wood Lane coming oput or Rothwell. Opposite the Jaw Bones.Sixties I think as I can't remember it myself but it was talked about.Does the 9 hole golf course me and my mates built in St Georges Hospital grounds in the early 80's count? Par threes and only a PW required.

I wonder if the fields are still there or now built over (I would suspect the latter). I was at Cockburn from 1960 to 1965.The playing fields were on Middleton Grove and yes they have been built over Thanks uncle mick. One thing I remember at the playing fields was the walk down to a shower room and the rush back up to the lads changing room to dry off. Things were timed so that boys and girls were not both around at the same time when going to and from the shower rooms (I feel sure there were separate shower rooms for boys and girls). Probably my most embarrassing experience ever was once when coming back naked from a shower (as was the norm for lads) some lasses ended their games early and entered the corridor in the building just as I was naked on my way to the lads changing room. I was about 12 or 13 at the time. It could have been any of us lads, but it was me! I can now but I could have died with embarrassment at the time.

I seem to recall a decent football pitch off Whitehall Road up near the old Dunlop and Rankin Steel site. This will have been throughout the 80's. At one point it did have wooden changing facilities and was used by, I believe, Wortley Boys FC.

I refer to my today's post in the Cricket field thread where I mentioned the vacant land on Penda's Way. Could this be classified as a lost sports field because, although the intention was that it be a sports field, actually it was never used as such.

I played for the Fire Brigade soccer team in the final for the 'REKLAW' Cup, on the UMI ground. the season of 57/58. We beat the Post Office 3-2 aet. ( Most unusual, as we never usually won a game all season.). The Reklaw Cup was named after the gent that sponsored the Half Holiday League. It's just his name spelt backwards. Walker.! There were some good teams in the league. Games played on Wednesday afternoon. Hence the name, Half Holiday ( half day closing,) League.
