John Wayne manages to beat the Vietcong in the film the Green Berets and enjoys his victory by watching the sun set over the South China Sea.

A "What's What" of the County' published in Leeds by The Yorkshire Evening Post it states"Where in Yorkshire does the sun rise and set in the sea?". The answer is "At Whitby, during June and early July". I have never observed it but I understand it is an illusion due to how Whitby is positioned.

I was more interested by the failed plans at the turn of the 20th Century to create a whole new resort there, which appears to have gotten as far as a station and laying out the roads, drains, etc but little further. It was also covered in one of the episodes in one of the series of coast. Now in its 4th (?) series. That was the clip they showed, with the effervescent Mark Horton. The Country Tracks idea is that a presenter (Jodie Kidd in this episode) tours round an area and they splice in previously filmed "rural" articles - usually from Countryfile, but they seem to be including Coast nowadays too - from the places en route.

I caught the last half of it, looks quite good so I'll have to have a look. Ravenscar looked really interesting. If its the Ravenscar near Robin Hoods Bay it was a Roman Signal Post one of many along that coast. It is. I was more interested by the failed plans at the turn of the 20th Century to create a whole new resort there, which appears to have gotten as far as a station and laying out the roads, drains, etc but little further.Could be quite an interesting spot to have a wander round with the camera and to swot up on the history of the place. Hi raveydavey I have had a few drinks in the big hotel there this could have been part of the failed plans. If you get there at the right time on a summers evening and see the sun go down over Robin Hoods Bay that is a site you will never forget. Sounds worth a trip. I once sat and watched the sun set over Mecca and I'll not forget that in a hurry. Mind you, it was from the Travellers Rest car park at Crossgates (an in joke from Crossgates for you there...)

Maps show that Whitby harbour does face north going out to sea, so presumably (though I'm not sure why ) that may be a reason behnd that the Sun can seem like it is setting in the east at times. Very odd!

Very odd! Thanks for that Leodian Its funny but when you go to Whitby and look out to sea from the harbour you think you are looking east not north.I would bet most of the people who visit Whitby dont know this.
