Legion of Frontiersmen

I've just been handed a photo by my dad (94), which shows my mother's father (Taylor) who sevred in the army before and during World War 1 and who became a sergeant.There is a group of some 50 soldiers in the usual tiered array, and the photo frame is inscribed "Leeds Rifles, Legion of Frontiersmen".The internet does not come up with anything relevant, I wonder if anyone has information as to what this band of heroes was, for starters was it regular Army, what I can find on the net indicates Frontiersmen were more like a freelance band of brethren, cavalry??Cheers

When I was a kid, late 40's/early 50's, I used to see a Frontiersman quite regularly waiting for a bus outside Compton Road Library. Dressed in a black cavalry type uniform with silver buttons and epaulettes, Sam Browne belt, cavalry boots and a Boy Scout type stetson hat he looked for all the world like a RCMP. I had completely forgotten about him 'til my memory was jogged. As a kid the uniform was to die for.

Thanks for the replies to date, very much appreciaed. I'll look at the web site given, and reply to Dean when I have had chance to look up some stored papers. My G/f was in the army, I think, 1905-1919 and he died shortly after from, i was told, a combination of gas and drink!More anon, in the meantime thanks againR'man.
