Well, after all the waiting The Bowling Green has opened tonight in fine style. I had to pay a flying visit to a friend at Weston Estate and parked the car and just had a walk past. The place was heaving - inside and out - and its grand to see it. It was a bit rowdy with Friday night exhuberance, as were other nearby places, but no sign of any trouble. One thing though that will have to be nipped in the bud - the Memorial Garden wall tops were plastered with empty pint glasses and bottles - as well as being untidy this is just asking for trouble, but will no doubt be attended to by JDW's staff once the system is in full swing.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Fingers crossed for The Woodman then.Yes, RaveyD, Jack was in there and Billy Bremner as well, sometimes on a Friday night. If I remember rightly they played dominoes in a little room at the back of The Woodman with a few local friends. Billy Bremner lived in Halton - compare that with the wages and houses now !!!If I remember correctly the year when I saw them in the Woodman was 1968/9Great memories - thanks for kick starting my brain!

An old chap in the Woodman told me that Billy Bremner was a regular domino player in there and he was often with Twiggy (the sixties model).I have no idea if this is true and my hubby scoffed when I told him this lol. . . .said I am so gullible lol.

I visited the Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon. It was three-deep at the bar the whole time I was there. The interior is unrecognisable from the pub's previous incarnation. The wall that was behind the old bar has been opened up so that you can walk through to the courtyard (now glazed over) and the new bar runs the interior length of the old coach house opposite. It's not somewhere I'd go for a pint and a chat, but might come in useful if fast for somewhere to grab a cheap bite to eat. There has been an effort to add some local history to the walls, but I didn't see anything Ledgard-based!

The New Scarborough on Dewsbury Road, Tingley is expected to close tonight. The current occupants are leaving tomorrow, Tuesday 13th July, and I believe there is no one to take over the business. The pub itself has been badly run down recently by a couple who were not up to the job.Whether Mr Metal Shutters turns up to do his bit to this Enterprise House remains to be seen. The pub is in a nice area and at one time was a very busy local with a good reputation for food. It would be nice if Ossett or Leeds took it over, but I expect Enterprise will be looking to find another set of idiots to pour their money into it.Tingley Drinker Apologies I am new to the group and I posted this initially in the wrong place.

[quotenick="SiThere has been an effort to add some local history to the walls, but I didn't see anything Ledgard-based!     Yes Si, that is most disappointing. The Samuel Ledgard Society, and me personally, made many approaches which we felt were convincing to JDWs in the early days and received replies which seemed at least promising. Such a theme would seem obvious since the SL Depot is right across the road, and we promised to help with photos, archives etc. That aside though, I'm sure that a theme based on one of Otley's many famous industries would have gone well in the town.

KeyholekateThe dominoes, BillyB and JackC were qite correct and the cigs, but as a young lad of 17 I think I may have noticed Twiggy!! LOLSo I know first hand that Jack and Billy got in there, but I am afraid I missed out on Twiggy, perhaps she was in Graveley's on Chapel Street getting fish and chips!Let's hope the Woodman stays open! Thanks for the infoBest wishes

The "history" items are framed pictures with a headline and caption, ie: "Jubilee Clock" etc. Maybe there is one entitled "Sammy Ledgard's" somewhere?
