Just discovered this fabulous website and hope that someone, somewhere can help me.I am tracing my family history and have found that my great great grandad was a George Bennett, who apparently started his own business in stained glass (and probably other glass). I cannot find any info about this business and think it may have been taken over at some point.Does anyone know of this business, I think it was called Bennetts Glass and was located possibly in Hunslet, Whitkirk or Crossgates.Hope someone can help me with some pointers.Thanks.

Hi Kilnkreations,I remember there used to be a Bennett's Glass sign by the roundhouse at the end of Armley Road (Wortley/Holbeck border.) It was white with light blue lettering and 'B' logo. I don't know if that is where the factory was, or whether it was just an advertisement. My brother says he went to school with one of their clan, in the 70s, and reckons they lived near Stainburn, between Otley and Harrogate (so they must have been quite well off.) I don't know what happened to the business, but the sign was there up til the mid 80s, at a guess. That's as much as I know, I'm afraid.Cheers,Si. PS Incidentally, along the wall from there, was a huge sign painted on the wall in black and white for a tyres and exhaust place - in letters three feet high it was spelt "TYRES AND EXHUASTS!"

Hi Si,Yes I did go to school with Mark Bennett, his dad ran Bennet's Glass and it was indeed where you say, down the side of the round house.Mark and two older brothers went to the same school, unfortunately Mark got expelled!! so not seen him in years. If I remember correctly it was not ornate/coloured glass though, he told me they did security glass, the type used at tellers in banks and building societies that could withstand close range gun fire!!Hope this is of some help??
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I'm interested in learning more about Bennetts Glass - do you or your family still have any documents relating to it?
