My Dad worked in the Aire Street Railway offices in the 1940s/50s until retiring and used to take me in as a little kid many a time so that I could ride in the beautiful green "marble" lined Waygood Otis lifts - they were "state of the art" in those days.I suppose its all altered in there long ago ?? You'll find a bit about these in the subways and dark arches bits.Jim........talk to Blakey!!!!

Blakey, I'm a little out of touch with the current state of play at Aire Street office block these days, but as Chameleon says there is some info on the Otis lifts on the "Leeds Railway Stations' Lost World" thread in the two most recent pages.I understand that the offices are to be converted to other use, and have probably already undergone a refit since privatisation of the rail business. Certainly the lifts were refitted to the point were their earlier individuality and splendour was lost, including the "fast" lift's very special electrical an mechanical workings being completely altered.Do you get the impression that Chameleon sees himself as some sort of a wedding planner? Sorry boys, I'm already taken!

Going to be new BTP offices and cells.BTP relocating from concourse (to be replaced by KFC and Tesco express) and from 3rd floor of admin block.3rd floor will then be occupied by East coast, relocating management from Aire Street Building. The removal of East Coast from Aire Street (the last occupiers) will enable the Queens to expand sideways and put in the necessary facilities for it to be 5 star. Wayhay KFC in Leeds city centre thats a first eh?ps/ I suppose its one way to get rid of the pigeons lol But another Tesco? For chuffs sake, how many branches of blooming Tesco must one city have foisted on it?

I have to admit that lifts have always fascinated me, and in my first job as a junior at an Insurance office in South Parade I had to visit many lovely old buildings in th area Headrow,Park Row,East Parade, Infirmary Street etc. Possibly the winner of first prize was a magnificent ancient elevator in BARDon Chambers - a super building whose front was shored up for preservation and a new office block built onto it - now called GoodBARD House.

Was he ?? - I think you are "skirting round " my reply to avoid being held to contract Many thanks indeed for the pointing out the fascinating facts about those lifts. I had completely forgotten about one of the two being "express" (beware of copyright action there from a Leicester lift maker ). Those "test drives"on top of the blooming things sound quite suiciidal to me and you wouldn't have caught me riding up there.
