Elsworth Terrace (top centre) on the 1906 Godfrey OS map. As you can see, it was very close to Armley Gaol. Click on the map to enlarge it.

Thanks for the replies, photos and map, unfortunately I remember Gran living in Pudsey in the 1960's when I was a nipper, think she moved out of Elsworth Terrace when her Mum and Stepfather died about 1954-56. Annie Leng her mum remarried to James Conway in 1916-17.Julie

My dad was born in this area, and also moved to Pudsey in the 50s.

My Mum's family maternal and paternal family seemed to spend most of their time within sight/walking distance of Armley jail up until the late 1950's, never inside as far as I'm aware I think my Gran moved to Scott Street after leaving Elsworth Terrace, I know Mum and I had to catch the No11 or No5 bus (not sure which) in Seacroft and it seemed to go down a long straight road in Pudsey near the end of the journey, turn round in a U shape to go back up the hill for the journey home, not sure if that's right I was only about 4 or 5 at the time but it felt like it did a big U turn. Gran moved to the top of pool bank that row of 6 cottages past the Dyneley Arms on the way to Otley in the late 1960's, I used to love the view over the reservoir.Jools

Hi everyone,There was also another Police Station in the area which was called New Wortley Police Station. It was situated at 69 Wellington Road, Leeds 12 at the junction with Milnes Terrace. It was built as a Police Station and Divisional Headquarters in 1866 and it closed down in 1935. After this date, the premises were occupied by a clothing factory, the Fire Brigade during the war, and then from 1949 until 1959 by the Police again. The premises were later demolished. There was a Police Station situated in Upper Wortley Road from 1857 until 1898. It was next to the Upper Wortley Police Station, shown in the photograph above, which replaced it in 1898. A library was also built next to it. The last Upper Wortley Police Station closed in 1978 but the area was then policed from the 'new' Pudsey Police Station which was built in the early 1970's. Ian

This was the old tram terminus, as well I think. I'll post a pic.My previous neighbour, who died a couple of years back, was born and brought up in one of those cottages, Jools.

I know you were only young, but does this look familiar? The photo is taken from the site of the former Congregational Chapel, demolished for flats in the 70s, I think. Chapeltown is to the right, Greenside to the left, and Uppermoor Road goes up the hill, centre. The white building is the Commercial, with what used to be Hagenbach's bakery next door.

Hi Si and IanI never realised there were so many Police Stations in the Wortley/Armley area, no wonder crime was low in those days. The photo looks vaguely familiar, I know when you got off the bus you had to walk down a steep hill a bit to where there were stilll streets of back to backs with cobble stones roads to get to Gran's house, she lived in one of the back to backs next to Mrs Woodhead, it must have been around the late 60's that she moved perhaps for clearance like most of the back to backs in Harehills, I'm sure that she moved to Pool Bank before 1970 because I remember watching that horrible kids tv show at her house on Pool Bank, the one with Jack Wilde and the big hats and talking trees, used to scare me witless.Jools

Hi everyoneJust to say that having got the full 1911 census details for my Great Grandfather it turns out he was a policeman for the railway company I don't know if that makes it any easier to find out more about him.Jools
