Hi Cardiarms, I have carefully considered your suggestions, and think that the sheer size of the structure is overwhelmingly large for any such needs. The wooden sheds are very small by railway Carriage and Wagon standards. The Midland railway's local wagon works was at Stourton, to the NE side of the Wakefield Road bridge. They must have exceeded the buildings we are looking at in floor area by a factor of at least ten times, and there was no hauling or lifting provision other than large jacks, and the machining provision was very modest. Movement of vehicles was always by shunt or "manumotive" power.Railways always carried out major C&W repairs and overhauls at centralised main workshops,those of the Midland Railway being at Derby. The nearest such works to Leeds were those of the North Eastern Railway at York. All C&W repairs at Leeds Wellington would have been of a minor nature of the kind that some railways would carry out in the open at the end of a siding! It may have been that the sheds at Wellington were used to "refresh" paintwork on carriages, but that is pure supposition. I'm sorry to appear negative again about the ideas of others, but I can only speak as my years working as a railway engineer (which included spells at the Doncaster and Darlington main works) tell me.

You had to pass a test to obain a certificateto operate a public weighbridge.Came across mine a couple of years ago,god knows where itwent to though.All to do with weights and measures legislation.

Had a look at the tower in the Leeds weekly news and can confirm that it appeared to be a mystery tower without any obvious purpose.but I love trying to find out....

Cardiarms, me too. It is, they say, better to travel hopefully than to arrive-------and what would we have to talk about if we knew everything?Bring on more puzzles!

Hi Si, great examples of concerted effort to problem-solve, and fascinating topics.Regarding that natter, it's a long time since I visited Otley, so it could be a possible option for me to use my bus pass and get the drinks in, and you could reciprocate when "away fixtures" become easier for you! If the prospect appeals, let me know.
