As I say it was at least 10 years ago but, it was the sort of pub you wouldn't forget about calling into. Is the Yew Tree still open in Otley Si? Yes it is (I know I'm not Si, but the info is kosher - honest!)
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

lcrane wrote: Hi everyone, I've just joined this forum, as it looked like it might be very useful for information on a project I'm working on.Basically, I'm interested in capturing through photos and quotes/anecdotes a sort of snapshot of what pubs are today, to celebrate and appreciate them as one of the last community hubs.I've set myself a 20 mile radius of Leeds, and am aiming to photograph a wide range of pubs, events and people to show what they can offer and hopefully also raise awareness that 39 or so are closing every week.Mostly locating the best pubs has relied on word of mouth, and I've found some great ones this way, but I'm hoping (please?) that some of you may be able to recommend some lesser-known places for me to visit.I'm particularly keen to visit unusual or special events, such as charity do's, sports, live music/comedy, interest group meets (such as bikers) or anything else which represents the diversity of pubs as a community base. Can anyone recommend anything that would fit the bill? It's also good to hear any stories or memories about the pubs. Thanks so much in advance for any help!. Hi icrane you will see we sometimes drift off thread at times i think this helps keep this site going.I hope you have got a few more ideas now. If you get a chance to post a picture or two i for one would like to see them good luck with your task. P.S. Preferably the pubs would be fairly safe and welcoming for a little lass with an expensive camera!
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

[quotenick="SiNothing like a nice practical run-about!PS I think I've seen you tootling round Otley on a Royal Enfield, Blakey! Will look out for the new Suzuki. The Royal Enfield was maroon Si - I've had the yellow Suzuki since it was new in January 2003 and the new Jinlun "cruiser" is also maroon - both are frequent visitors to lovely Wharfedale
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

If I remember rightly it had an old bog seat on the bar and, alot of other stuff salvaged from skips which made up the pubs unique decor. I don't know if it's the same now but, if it is I'm sure it would make for some interesting photography. I must pay it a visit again with my camera. Yes , I suppose so. Only one teensy problem - its shut down! Is it a recent closure, as it looked to still be open on Google street view? I guess it just goes to show, just how out of date the images really are on street view! It opened up in about March last year I think and the iron door seemingly went up again last month - I only pass through occasionally now so I don't know when. The people who tried it last year didn't do much to the place and didn't seem to be very interested in maintaining the list of beers they claimed to have. It did most of its business with the bands on Friday and Saturday nights and the Tarn has managed to take a lot of that away. It's certainly atmospheric but dead in the week. I considered approaching the pubco about it last year with the intention of turning it into more of a family pub but other things got in the way, and I suspect it's probably got one more stay before being sold and gutted to be flats.

Thanks drapesy, Si & simong.Icrane would Brighouse, Elland & Sowerby Bridge be too far for you to travel? The Red Rooster at Brighouse was bit of a biker pub last I heard. further along the same road, The Barge & Barrel at Elland has it's own brewery and, serves a selection of real ales I believe. Lastly the Puzzle Hall at Sowerby Bridge has live bands at weekends. One last suggestion a little closer to Leeds, York Raceway/Pennine Drag Racing Club, hold it's club nights at East Ardsley Conservative Club usually on the 1st Tuesday of each month.

Hi, sorry I've been away for a while! Thanks for the suggestions coming in Sowerby Bridge is right on the edge of the radius I set myself, but still within it, and Elland is too. Someone mentioned the Puzzle to me when I was in Hebden, so that's definitely on my list. Good to hear about biker bars... bit of a personal interest there but I'd definitely like to incorporate it into my project. I've started putting the photographs up on flickr; still a lot more to go and have had to leave off a few due to people in them not wanting me to put them online, but I'd welcome any feedback. I'm fairly new to photography (being more of a painter/designer) so always good to get advice! http://www.flickr.com/photos/artfulcran ... 198/thanks again
