Hi The Parksider i dont know if you know Pudsey at all. This old mill is on the foot path between Troydale and Roker Lane on the other side of the beck its used as a scrap yard you cant see it from Tong Road. No idea what it was called.

TillyA nice set of pics ......... I can definately confirm that the wee becks with their beds coated orange are definately the consequence of water discharging from old coal/iron workings (as I described above somewhere). Looks nasty, and is utterly catastrophic for invertabrates living in the beck (and the rest of the food chain that they support) due to the orange sediment coating everything, but the water will be relatively clean! The problem can often be easily solved by a combination of oxyegenating the water by making it tumble down a cascade and then collecting the sediment in reed beds. A nice example of the Coal Authority's work dealing with this pollution up here in bonnie Scotland is illustrated here:http://www.coal.gov.uk/media/F0153/envt ... 10-11.pdfN
