That looks like it could be the western end of the ginnel, in which case, the building on the left with the gas-lamp and (beer?) barrels would be the back of the Old Red Bear?

There was another one on the corner of Skinner Lane and Mabgate. Here's the Old Red Bear (Marsh Lane) looking roughly north, taken in April 1908. The fenced path on the left, running behind the pub, must be the end of Back Lane.Pic from Leodis.

Picture taken in 1901. Leodis says that the gap on the right is Red Bear Yard, so the pub must be just on the edge of the shot to the right. The previous picture was taken from just in front of the railway bridge. The station is to the left, and the buildings opposite have been demolished on the previous photo. They don't appear on the 1908 map either, but the signals (SP) does.

Not sure what it means but White's Gazetteer and Directory, 1853 has Back lane down as Back Lane, 97 Marsh Lane.http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Mi ... tmlRegards.

The caption says the ginnel ran from Kirkgate, roughly eastwards, parallel with Marsh Lane. However, I can't find it on any old maps, whether named or not. The pics were taken in 1901.Does anybody know where it was (or possibly is?) Si - The back Lane off Marsh Lane I have searched for on Leodis has three pictures - none of which are the two you post??Any ginnel depicts as a very thin unamed gap betwen housing and industrial/commercial buildings etc, and any photo may not give too much away as regards length. On Godfrey 1906 the odd ginnel seems to show adjacent the ironworks in the east street/marsh lane/garden street triangle.there's 4 pubs marked as PH one of which is the Palace (yes Secret Leeds own) another I take to be the smiths and a third and fourth that maybe Liits can enlighten us on?"Possible" ginnel site close to Kirkgate and Marsh Lane? There are five pubs in the vicinity. The Palace, marked in green and still open.A = Smiths Arms - closed in the 80's [or very late 70's]B = Silk Mill - closed some time in the 50's. Leodis pic here http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... fier=4600C = Dyers Arms - Closed in 1912.D = Spinner's Arms - closed 1927 [not to be confused with the Spinners on Accommodation Road]
