The caption says the ginnel ran from Kirkgate, roughly eastwards, parallel with Marsh Lane. However, I can't find it on any old maps, whether named or not. The pics were taken in 1901.Does anybody know where it was (or possibly is?) Si - The back Lane off Marsh Lane I have searched for on Leodis has three pictures - none of which are the two you post??Any ginnel depicts as a very thin unamed gap betwen housing and industrial/commercial buildings etc, and any photo may not give too much away as regards length. On Godfrey 1906 the odd ginnel seems to show adjacent the ironworks in the east street/marsh lane/garden street triangle.there's 4 pubs marked as PH one of which is the Palace (yes Secret Leeds own) another I take to be the smiths and a third and fourth that maybe Liits can enlighten us on?"Possible" ginnel site close to Kirkgate and Marsh Lane?

From Leodis....11th August 1913. w from St James Street of St James Place, with Sunny Bank Passage going off in the background towards Cankerwell Lane. St James tavern can be seen on the right. In the background there is a street lamp attached to a building in the passage way.

It must be an error on Leodis' part, or there was another pub of the same name in the Marsh Lane area. Cardiarms mentioned that there was a Queen's Arms under the Civic Hall/Millenium Square earlier.

liits wrote: I think the ginnel that you mention shows up quite well on the 1908 maps running behind the Red Bear . I don't know of any George & Dragon, that one must have gone before 1908, but it is quite close to the Lewis Arms [or maybe it was the Eagle, I cant recall, A on the map]. Thanks Liits. It looks like Leodis has definately made a mistake here. After locating the Old Red Bear, I also spotted that ginnel on the map. I'm pretty sure that it must be Back Lane, but it doesn't fit Leodis' description 100% as to it's location, and some of the pubs mentioned (North Eastern and Queen's Arms - unless there was another) certainly don't back onto it!

Hi Parksider - do you mean the one by Dew Lane? I think Back Lane is the ginnel shown on Liits map, above. Even though it's much further away from Kirkgate (beyond the railway) than Leodis says, the fact that the Old Red Bear (very unusual name) pub backs onto it clinches it for me.

Actually, the map insert is quite a bit off, here's a second attempt.

6th April 1908. Back Lane off Marsh Lane Derelict buildings surrounding patch of waste ground which is strewn with rubble. A man and a boy are standing at the entrance of a narow passageway between the buildings.ps. This same pic is on Leodis dated 1901, it looks like the man and boy have been stood there 7 years!
