While looking through Leodis researching on another thread for Back Lane near Farnley, I found these pictures of a Back Lane in the Bank area. The caption says the ginnel ran from Kirkgate, roughly eastwards, parallel with Marsh Lane. However, I can't find it on any old maps, whether named or not. The pics were taken in 1901.Does anybody know where it was (or possibly is?)

Another shot. Apparently, it ran behind several pubs - the Old Red Bear, the North Eastern, the George and Dragon and the Queen's Arms. Where were they?

Thanks, Chris and Mick. I think Back Lane ginnel must have been further east, between Marsh Lane and York Street, so not that near Kirkgate. A narrow, un-named passage is shown on Godfrey's 1908 Central Leeds OS map in this area. Will check the pub's locations to confirm. Thanks again.

Obviously, the Old Red Bear and the George and Dragon were on Marsh Lane, but I can't find the other streets associated with the North Eastern and the Queen's Arms on the 1908 map (Catherine Street, Sunny Bank Street, etc.) Anyone know where they were?Cheers.

This is the very forlorn-looking North Eastern Hotel, at the junction of Catherine Street and Cross Catherine Street, as found on Leodis by Chris. A comment posted with it says it's Bank, and that the surrounding houses were demolished in the 30s, but the pub lasted until the 50s.

The North Eastern was at the junction of Catherine Street and Cross Catherine Street. As with most of the Bank, the area was filled with pubs. Within staggering distance were the Tunnel Inn [shown as C on the map], The Union Inn , and the North Eastern itself [A]. The union lasted into the 50's while the Tunnel closed in 1922.

I think the ginnel that you mention shows up quite well on the 1908 maps running behind the Red Bear . I don't know of any George & Dragon, that one must have gone before 1908, but it is quite close to the Lewis Arms [or maybe it was the Eagle, I cant recall, A on the map].
