am wondering if anyone could give me there opinion on a name in the 1891 census please. http://imageservice.ancestry.co.uk/iexe ... sh=0&sw=0i am looking at what the name is under Henry Appleyard ? it states Louise Gumersall. but i think it looks like Annie to me, would like a few others opinions. the reason been is that she is listed as housekeeper and the whole family i can not find anywhere for 1881? Henry is listed with the children in 1901 with Annie as his wife. but then next is Edward Appleyard b1879 can be found possibly I think the son Edward in 1891census may be Louise Gomersall's (name ???) son,1881 has him as Gumsel with grandparents.There are two marriages for a Henry Appleyard in Wakefield where possible spouses are Hannah Gomersall (1895) and perhaps a Hannah Maria Staite (1896).Perhaps Louise was also Hannah ?? then shortend to Annie?? i know confusing but have been stuck on this for the last couple of days.

To me it looks like Annie Gomersall. Definitely not Louise. The fact that Edward and Hannah are immediately below Annie(son and daughter), and then comes Sarah Appleyard must mean that Edward & Hannah are Gomersall

weenie wrote: so could Annie be Hannah do you think, also who could the other childrens mum be? thankyou for your opinion on this, much apprieciated Cant see the image,but Annie /Hannah could well be the enumerator mishearing what has been said.If persons in a household were unable to read or write then the enumerator would fill in the form on the householders behalf,bascially stood at the doorstep.It could be quite easy for the enumerator to misinterpret or mishear what the householder says,say those two names out loud and see what i mean.Add the Leeds accent into the mix (not pronouncing the letter "H") and its even more the case that it could be misheard.This is why its always worth spreading name parameters, in a search for a person in any given census, if you cant first find them.

Very true. I have been doing a tree for someone called Ballantyne, on 2 census's they were listed as Valentine

Thankx guys, i used annie and what a confusion i got!!! they have spelt Gomersall all different ways!! but have finally finished this piece of puzzle thanks again

I have been trying to trace a birth on the Find my past website and found two entries for the same person but under different surnames. I thought that this could only be done if the said person had been adopted. This person had never been adopted so are there any other reason that this could have occured
