In another thread I mentioned, what to us both kids and adults were always known as, "Compton Ollers". It started me thinking as to what was built on there originally, if anything, and then demolished? As kids we never knew it as anything else but wasteland until they started building things on it in the 50's. Does any Secret Loiner know?

Just comment that when I was living in Harehills there were 2 "ollers" we used to play on. The one off Compton road and a smaller one off Lupton Avenue , bounded by Hudson Rd & Sutherland Rd. I remember houses being built on that patch of land about 1955/6. There was no security fencing of sites in those days and we continued playing on the site while the houses were being built. Many years later the penny dropped and I realised that the "ollers" of my youth were probably "Hollows".
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!
