It seems that, confusingly there were 2 Whitaker's breweries.- William Whitaker's in Bradford, that was acquired by Tetley's in 1959 and Richard Whitaker's in Halifax (the 'Cock o' th' North Brewery) that was swallowed up by Whitbread in the 1960s. Which was the owner of The Union Cross I don't honestly know.Incidentally the name 'Union Cross' is an anachronistic term referring to the British flag - what we would now call 'Union Jack' or 'Union Flag' as some prefer. Here's another pic of the sign outside the pub - its just possible to make out some of the writing seen in the period pic. The Bracket that held the lamp above the front door was still there.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Were there any stocks in Armley, or is it just named after a Mr Stocks? And was Crab Lane named after Mr Crab? Or Lamb Hill after Mr Lamb? And why on earth Mistresss Lane? There's no Mistress Avenue, Crescent, Road, Street etc etc etc ... ... WE NEED ANSWERS.
