If you look at the bottom left hand corner there's a cover - not sure what it is though. It's impossible to check now because the lot's gone. The one of the morley depot? Don't see anything right but thr one on the laft looks like a fairly modern YW chamber cover to me.

The tram depot might have gone, but those tracks AND cover were still there when i photographed them here last Summer.http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn ... 636492898/

When I was a kid the tracks at the junction of Worral Street and Fountain Street were still there - whether they are still there under the tarmac I wouldn't like to guess - but it wouldn't surprise me if they were. The tracks in Leeds used to end abruptly just before the bridge on Elland Road outside the Greyhound Stadium

I understand about the "Earthing grates" as mentioned in the other threads but what were the grates that are the subject of this thread for ?Are there cable runs under there and if so were they feed cables or return cables and did the grates simply allow access for inspection etc or were they there for another purpose - like junctions etc in the cable runs

This supplied AC power to a number of sub-stations. In the substations the AC voltage was stepped down to a lower voltage by a transformer and an AC motor drove a dynamo to generate the low voltage DC suppled to the tram by the overhead wires. The return was via the wheels and tram tracks to the earthing grids you refer to.I am old enough to remember Leeds trams running and I don't think there were overhead powerlines distributing the AC current from the power station to the sub stations. I suspect this AC power supply was actually distributed by cables in underground ducts. Can anyone confirm this? Also does anyone know how many sub-stations there were and where they were located? Also what voltages were used in the AC supply to the substations and DC supply to the trams. There must be some tram buffs out there who know this sort of stuff. In the early days of trams there was some debate about how safe it was to use the rails as the return conductor. I certainly never knew they were "live" when i was a kid and the only danger I knew was getting your bike wheels stuck in the tram tracks when you cycled over them.
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!
