Yep!! there are several in the vicinity, a few are marked Electricity.I assume these are from the 50's, and this one is a left over from the trams, which ran past in the adjacent reservation.

I can think of a couple of 'Electriicity Board' ones which were on a Crossgates estate then and looked as though they had been there since power was installed. Always had a strange Phill-like desire to get one open to look down but, not something you did back then

Would these have originally had wood across them?
There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

So if these were for the tramway system (and I'm not doubting it for one moment) what were the purpose of them ?I have always assumed, perhaps wrongly, that trams took their power from overhead and the return via the rails was just run to earth with earthing straps at regular intervals.Would these grates allowed access to power cables that fed the supply, were they for cables that returned the power to earth and why were they there - perhaps at points along the system where there were junctions in the power supply ?

Seems plausible and likely - there are examples of 'earthing grates' on another thread.
