My dad was a member of Morley Wesleyan Friendly Society, he paid his subs. every week, at an office on Peel Street in Morley. I joined too when I started work, but let my membership lapse. If you were off sick they paid you 10/- a week, reducing to 5/- and then 2/6 if you were sick up to retirement. The society is long defunct, but I'd like to find our what happened to it. I've tried Googling it and I've tried the Morley Community Archives site and there's nothing on there. Does anyone have a clue as to where I should begin looking?

You could try the Kingston Unity Friendly Society in Park Square. My old man was a Lodge Secretary for years, his lodge later being merged with others as numbers fell. I still pay into the kingston Unity [£4.16 a year!], it pays for my glasses and a new set of teeth every so often!

It might be worth an enquiry to the National Archives, who seem to have some sort of register of Friendly Societies, see:http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.go ... _Societies
