Been selling Poppies outside a supermarket over the last few weeks and what has amazed me is how much booze people are carrying out.It explains why the pubs are closing!.I have said the same thing about local high streets, use em or lose em. It is our fault that the pubs are closing, we choose to go to a city centre club or drink at home.Ball is in our court!, don't blame the supermarkets, we shop there then complain when the butcher, baker etc closes.

It has a perfect Melbourne Courtier Mosaic on the front wall. That would be a real shame - this is possibly the finest surviving Melbourne mosaic - The Horse and Jockey in Wakefield has a similar one
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Gosh that takes me back to very happy youthful days in 1953/4. I worked in an insurance office (yawn) in Leeds and used to visit an older office colleague and her husband who lived at the top of Wide Lane. They used to take us to the Sycamore (seem to remember we turned left at the top of Wide Lane and then crossed that road) They always referred to the the pub as "The Seccy." I wonder whatever happened to Pam and Bernard B***k - I would love to see them again if they're still around. They had their first baby while I was in the RAF and she sent me a photo of the infant - on the back was written "******" born 24 October 1955 and RENEWABLE ANNUALLY THEREAFTER" - the capital letters were an insurance office term - Pam had a mischievous and lovely sense of humour.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I posted that I thought the Hare and Hounds at West Ardlsey had closed, well it hasn't. It may as well have as far as I'm concerned. They've stopped selling cask beer I lived in West Ardlsey for ten years. From 1968 to 1978 and The Hare as everyone called it never removed its handpumps, this at a time when Keg beer appeared to be ousting real ale from every outlet. With the revival of cask beer and CAMRA the Hare found itself in the national Good Beer Guide. With the end of tied houses, and a several changes of landlord in the noughties The Hare has been going downhill. For me it's hit rock bottom. We went to the Bulls Head (jct Leeds Road and Rein Road) Pint of Sams and half of their excellent cider for SWMBO £3.50 and it was packed too. Serve 'em right if they do close say I.

He'll never die as long as we keep using some of his memorable phrases. Another was "s" biscuits for those that weren't chocolate. I'll let you guess what the "s" stands for, but they wouldn't let me put it on here.

But you've missed the bits about having fish 'n chips, taxi home, and still change from a fiver!
