Hi again,Having nicked part of the message from pefkos1 - ps if you go a bit north of there. That's where they film the exteriors Emmerdale.Darn right - it's actually on part of the Harewood estate nearest to Eccup reservoir as I discovered on a bike ride a couple of years ago. I'm minding my own business on a bridleway (trying not to fall off) and I see this village off to the right and thought i recognised it - then the light came on and I realised it was off the telly!Take care y'all and beware of part cooked sausages,Louxxx

I believe the pub was built 700 yrs after the Abbey Deano. Would that make it possible or plausible to have a tunnel between them? The pub was built a few hundred years after but if it was 700years it would mean the pub was built around 1850. Surely it must have been built before this, the roof is similar in height to the black bull in otley. The next time im in I can ask the landlord about the tunnel and the dates etc ..... Ive asked him before but cant remember what he said! However I do remember one thing he told me... During the time when the Canal was being made, the room with the pool table in was used to store dead bodies until they were sent to burial.

MotleyThe Barwick-in-Elmet Historical Society is very anxious to be in contact you about a visit to your bunker early in July. Could you contact the organisiing secretary Ann at ann.winter5@btinternet.com? The visit would involve about 20 members comiing in two batches on a Wednesday evening.

If you look further into this on secret Leeds you will see it's already been covered with Mike thinking the same as you untill we went further into it. I bet Mike doesn't think there is a tunnel now.. There is a whole host of reasons why the tunnel doesn't exist. (A) It's never been found in 700 years) (B) why should a secret tunnel be built in 1826 when the pub was built for the monks who havent lived there for hundreds of years because the place is a ruin? (C)when the biggest most detailed archeoligical dig ever at Kirkstall abbey was carried out it found everything including the kitchen sink but no great big whopping mile long tunnel. It's never been found & never will because it's not there! see here http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... readID=290

I was also told that a group of students from Leeds Uni explored it durin the 90s but didnt get very far because it had collapsed.....?

Yeah Deano.. What you get is a small element of truth in every rumour. Then the story gets more wierd & wonderfull as time goes by.. I know where this tale of the tunnel from the abbey to the pub comes from because we know where the tunnel is.. It certainly doesnt date back to the 11th centuary as it's built in brick, The tunnel may have a far more mundane purpose to it as i said to Mike research the history of the area & you may get wiser

There's a bit about the inn here http://www.theabbey-inn.co.uk/ It says it was an inn in 1826 but in most things you read 1826 is the actual date it was built. No matter what it says it's an 18th centuary building & mentions the dead bodies too :-/
