Spent many happy hours supping ale there with my old Dad when he lived in one of the tower blocks there. I take it from Jimbo5553's use of the word "was" that it's now gone the way of so many other Leeds pubs? If so, sad. The entire Seacroft Centre has gone - demolished nearly a decade ago and replaced with a huge Tesco Extra. So no more Sovereign or Pathfinder.Although it's not in a block of flats, The Monkswood (if it's still open), also at Seacroft has homes above it as it sits at the end of a parade of shops. I've never been in, mind.

Jeez. I had no idea. All earthly reminders of one entire chapter of my family history in Leeds obliterated at a stroke. That must be one hell of a big Tesco even by their standards. How in God's name did they get planning permission to replace hundreds of dwellings with one supermarket? And where do all the folk who used to live there live now I wonder?

The Hark to Rover on Spen Lane is under flats. It was originally shops but was converted. There's a thread about it here: http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... =327.There must be, or must have been others in the city as they're common enough in other places. I can remember that Parkhill in Sheffield had a particularily scary one. Was there one in Quarry Hill?

I worked in Wigan for 17 years - there's definitely a pub in the 13 storey flats near Wigan town centre, it's called "The Waterwheel" that's the only pub "in" a block of flats I've ever seen.

The scary one in Parkhill was called The Target, it used to be a nice pint (the locals demanded it).

How in God's name did they get planning permission to replace hundreds of dwellings with one supermarket? And where do all the folk who used to live there live now I wonder? Virtually everyone had moved out well before the place was demolished. The usual problems of pre-fab building materials: cold, damp, cost a fortune to heat, plus antisocial behaviour etc. Although the idea was a good one on paper, it didn't work out that way. I had a schoolfriend who lived there and it was grim - the bedrooms were near unusable during the winter due to huge black damp spores covering the walls. And the shopping centre was simply allowed to run down to the point where it was half empty when the decision was taken to close it. As a kid I can remember the place being rammed full of shoppers on a Saturday, but it ended up like the Marie Celeste. You are right, the Tesco is huge - have a look on Google mapshttp://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=seacroft+avenue+leeds&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=17.570731,39.418945&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Seacroft+Ave,+Leeds,+West+Yorkshire+LS14+6JD,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.82235,-1.458355&spn=0.0043,0.009624&t=h&z=17(You may need to cut and paste that link)And as for getting planning permission...I suspect it was a combination of getting the place off the councils books, Tesco promising loads of local jobs and big promises on other works that have never happened (such as the restoration of Seacroft Grange).

The shopping centre was in a frightful state for a long time before it came down, i don;t think i ever saw anything that big that derelict before. Think not just empty units but all the downstairs doors and windows boarded up and pretty much every upstairs window put through
