doing an on line search connected to the nameless in another thread I came across HM courts website 'xhibit' which summarisesall the courts business for the day.Lo and behold all this info for the whole country is available in Welsh.Who the chuff speaks Welsh ? and if it's as few(maybe not even thousands) how many can only speak Welsh(about a dozen)? Why oh why do we spend all this money pampering to a minority. It would make more sense to translate into Urdu,Bangladeshi, any European language even Eskimo and still reach a larger audience.Very much a case of the tail wagging the dog.God only knows how much this costs for every court in the land.

Loads of people speak welsh, whether these docs need to be translated is another question. IIRC all official docs have to be available in Welsh, introduced by the Tories back in the early 90s, when I worked in the Civil Service we had to arrange translation. I'm not sure though if the docs must be translated or if translations have to be made available if needed. More and more people will be bilingual in welsh as more schools teach in Welsh first, but also English.

Or a principality.Ever since Henry 8th extended the application of English Law to wales, to provide equivalent protection and application of law, the Welsh have had an ambivalent national/legal status, not a separate nation state but not the same country.

I went one better then the online translation and used the Welsh sod laying on the sofa who described it as a nice language best spoken with a head cold and also that any combination of the same four words can be made to mean any damn thing. Like Danish.

Should have done a bit of research before postingBut,One website estimates of population of approx 3m in Wales, approx 600,000 can speak Welsh, those who can only speak Welsh are minimal. It seems to be more about maintaining tradition than aiding everyday living.OK do it in Wales but I fail to see the need to impose it in cities Nationwide. How many people nationally will read todays Leeds court procedings in Welsh?,still maintain its the expensive tail wagging a very underfunded dog.

Many of those speak Welsh as their first language and bemoan the waste of time of putting all their docs into English. ;-D
