You can see Santa at the Cross Gates Shopping Centre, although it's certainly not in a Grotto. In fact, like much of the rest of the place, it's a disappointing dead loss.Perhaps the lack of Grotto's is an "elf and safety" issue?

Don't suppose it's the done thing now to send your kids into a dimly lit grotto to sit on an old mans knee!

After Dunblane and Soham I think things tightened up considerably. Have we over reacted? Who knows. The government presumably are running scared of The Sun and News of the Screws. Better be safe than sorry etc. How much little kids miss being introduced to a big fat bloke in a red suit and beard I don't know - and I'm certainly too old to remember. My mam used to take me to see Santa at Lewis's,a grotto with mechianical toys etc and all. What always used to amaze me is that when you went into Leeds for the sales on Jan 2 say, all the Christmas stuff had disappeared from Lewis's, Matthias Robinson, and Schofields, grotto and everything. I used to look for where it had been but couldn't find it.Morley Co-op used to have its own Santa in the "Emporium" the posh shop built between the wars on Queen Street. he used to arrive on the Saturday after Bonfire night. My cousin was one of his fairies once, but it wasn't as good as Lewis's.

Lewis's was totally magical to a kid at Christmas. The grotto was magnificent and the shop window had a great display.Apparently I had a phobia about santa.I'd refuse to sit on his knee but take the present.Lewis's also had one of the best toy departments around.I was lucky my Mam worked there so i went every Saturday with my Dad to pick her up.Great days
