Royal Hotel on Armley Town St. is now shuttered up, joining the Barleycorn nearby.

They do tend to be less than intimate but hey you can't have everything. They always have a good range of cask beers. The problem I have with Wetherspoons is that there isn't one in Morley. They're in Leeds, Bradford, Bingley, Batley, Wakey, Dewsbury, even Cleckheaton has one, but not Morley. In fact in the centre of Morley there isn't what I'd call a half decent pub. Why not? Why can't Wetherspoons buy one of the struggling pubs in Morley - the Stump, the Albion (which is falling down) the Sycamore, which is struggling, or better yet the Fountain which is a dump, the White Horse, which is currently up for sale, and turn it into a place where people want to go.

Trojan, Wetherspoons are to open another 250 pubs in the next 5 years http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8387862.stm so maybe Morley is in with a chance. Another report suggests they will be opening in smaller towns and 2nd or 3rd pubs in larger cities. Leeds city centre already has 3! Cuthbert Broderick, Stick or Twist and Becketts Bank. I think however they are unlikely to refurbish an existing pub in Morley as they usually take a building with a previous history and convert that. Having said that the only other Wetherspoon I can think of in Leeds, the 3 Hulats and Cuthbert Brodericks were pub conversions but of an imposing building (Foxes-Hulats) and of a very recent build (Qube- Brodericks)

Morley is a similar sized town to Batley which has one and I would say it's considerably larger than Cleckheaton which also has one. Apart from the Gardeners on Wide Lane (quite a distance from the town centre) there isn't a decent pub in the town. There's the Hare and Hounds at West Ardsley, the Top 'oil and Bottom 'oil at Churwell and the New Inn at Gildersome, but apart from the Gardeners nothing within walking distance, it really p!sses me off. I can walk to Morley station get the train to Batley's Cellar Bar or Dewsbury's West Riding Refreshment Rooms easier than I can get a decent pint in Morley

I am one of Wetherspoon's greatest admirers, not only for the reasonably priced drinks but also because of the excellent "something nice for everybody" menu and good honest food.Having said this though, I must just say that a friend and I some time ago went to the Assembly Rooms in Batley and were horrified by the state of the place - untidy, unclean and and scruffy tables and non descript cooking, and one or two very disreputable types (mid afternoon) supping, swearing etc - and that was just the females.Just to re-stress though, this is the one and only exception in many years of widespread Wetherspoon's dining. Two which we particularly like for character are the Devonshire in Skipton and the Winter Gardens in Harrogate. So there seems to be some hope then, that the Bowling Green in Otley will eventually open, the building having being owned by JDW for I think five years already.

A Weatherspoons in Morley would be ideal at the present time, there have been rumours that the old Pavillion/Orbit/Puccinis building at the corner of Fountain St/Queen St would make an ideal Weatherspoons pub. Presently, Morley offers no incentive for me to go out and drink in the town centre. When was the last time one of the pubs was re-decorated or refurnished. I currently go into Batley to the Irish Nash or down Leeds to the Scarborough and onto Whitleocks, the Ship, Becketts Bank. By the way, the Golden Fleece in Churwell is to be knocked down and a Tescos built on the site.
