arry awk wrote: I posted this thread or similar last week but it seems to have gotten Lost in transit!Try agen!Three more cinemas come to mind from the 30's/40's/50's;The Wellington at the Wellington Road end of Kirkstall Rd. I think there was a pub of the same name closeby.Heres The Wellington picture House from leodis. It says it closed in 1941 - but the building lasted much longer - I can distinctly remember seeing it from the top deck of a bus on the way to the rolarena in the late 60s.Arry - I've been trying to find anything about a pub near here called the Wellington - there was one on St.Philips street that was very near here - do you think thats the one.On the subject of pubs do you remember any of these on Wellington Road -all obliterated by the demolitions for the 'gyratory' - Albion, Royal George, Queen, Prince of Wales and Spotted cow. I think they were all on the same side -up from the White Horse on the corner of Armley Road - and very close to each other. Apparently they were sometimed referred to by their numbers on Wellington Road instead of names - for instance people said 'see you in the 78' rather than the'queen'.Let me know if any ring a bell - I've got pics from Leodis and will put on the lost pubs thread if you'd like to see them.

Hi DrapesySorry mate.can't help much in that dept. The house we lived in when I was 'pupped' was in Devonshire Stright opposite the rear of theWhite Horse on Armla'Rd/WellieRdJunction. My first whiff of Tetley's (I think?) was when I was parked out on the pavement with me dummy and thinking that the taste of the Ideal Condensed milk didn't exactly tally with the smell from the pub! As me dad never got further than the 'Oss,I can't vouch for the other pubs you mention! There was the Albion (mentionedby Simonm and others)up Armley Rd by the bend on the bridgeand the Oak ,sharp left over the bridge.I actually worked at Greenwood and Batley's (Greenbat) '75 to '80,so an excellent way to spend lunchetimes(liquid!). we sometimeswandered up to the Oak, Scarboro and Castleton, but staggering back to 'clock on' was murder with a bellyful!Re the Devonshire St location, there were half a dozen short streets backing on to the railway sidings, opening onto Armley Rd.We went to Collingham in '33 when dad was taken on by the GPOas a temp Postman.and when he was full time, we moved up the Rdto Bushire Street! (What a comedown from Collingham out in the country back to sooty smokey Leeds! Shutting up now No more space! Cheers, Arry

And there is now a Wellington on Wellington street - quite near the old cinema. But this used to be called the Central Station to about 20 years ago. It was then Scruffy Murphy's before becoming the Wellington.
