I remember John Wellington, pseudonym of the erstwhile leader writer of the YEP, when it was a proper paper, waxing lyrical about Ainsley's lemon buns. Must admit Gregg's does what it does very well. Must have been hard to compete with them. But Bakers Oven had better sausage rolls.

Much cheaper and dominate accross the country. No surprise at all. Ainsley's were hardly michelin star quality now were they.

There's been a Greggs in Otley for a while, and I think I'm right in saying Otley's Ainsleys opened only recently. Either way, their problem was that they're just a couple of doors down from Weegman's, and therefore their cooked meat products (pork pies, etc) never stood a chance!!! These were displayed in the window at first, but were moved to the back and replaced by cakes and biscuits.

Greggs???? We still call them Thurstons in our house, thankyou very much. They're not bad at what they do - in so much as you get exactly what it says on the tin (if that isn't mixing my metaphors too much?), but I've always rated Ainsleys above them.Lets hope Ainsleys find a saviour and don't go the same way as Malcoms or Hagenbachs...
