When I moved to Bramley about 1960 my pals always refered to the cinema on Town Street as the "bughutch". With advance billing like that needless to say I never set foot inside the place. Did it live up to its reputation?
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

Not quite Ronnie - it was on Boar Lane (north side) just beyond Basinghall Street. It was a very luxurious little cinema in a similar style to the News Theatre beneath the station.Having said that, you have reminded me though that in more recent times (late70s/early 80s ??) there was some kind of sleazy "cinema" in Call Lane which showed risque films in some upstairs premises - I bet that's where the confuston has arisen, but THE Tatler was the big one in Boar Lane. At some point in the seventies, after the Tatler had closed on Boar Lane, the News Theatre changed its name to the "Tatler Cinema Club" and as you say showed risque films.I went to the one on Boar Lane once and saw "The Man with the Golden Arm" it starred Frank Sinatra as a professional gambler - that's all I remember about it. Like the Merrion Centre Odeon, is the News Theatre actually still there intact, or not? Became a night club many years ago now, didn't it?

I've just been browsing through my exstensive "library" and come across a photo of tragic adult movie star Mary Millington posing naked outside the Tatler club cinema. It's probably a sad reflection of my advancing years that i found myself more excited by the discovery of a photo of a "Leeds lost cinema" than Miss Millingtons nubile form.

Talking of the Bughutch in Bramley it was actually called The Lido.Spent many a Saturday afternoon at the matinees and being the Lone Ranger or Zorro on the way home up Hough Lane. The film I do remember seeing there was The Adventures of Quinten Durward with Robert Taylor.I got into trouble with my Gran for fidgeting but what she did'nt realise that the spring had come throught the seat and made very uncomfortable to sit properly. We also had a "Posh" cinema at the end of town street called the Clifton where Greggs bakery stands now. That actually had a balcony.Saw Tommy the Toreador there with Tommy Steele.

So it was the Lido!-thanks for that. As I say i never set foot inside -put off by its nickname I suppose. The Clifton was another matter, we used to get into the A classication films ( minors had to be accompanied by an adult) by persuading adults in the foyer to "adopt us " and take us in. The Pavillion in Stanningley was another favourite, only a short busride away.

The Pavilion became a Bingo Hall, then a night club called "After Dark" and then after extensive renovation, an Italian restaurant called Puccinis. It only lasted about 6 months though and has stood empty for about 4 years.Someone stripped the lead off the roof but no one said anything because they were wearing hi-viz clothing
