I would love to know which boozer was his (possibly in either Hunslet, Holbeck or Wortley) as this would be the final piece of the jigsaw in my family tree (sorry about the mixed metaphor!) Was your GG grandad at the boot and shoe? http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... ifier=2175 He was, Carolynne. And his brother Joe had The Pine Apple on Quarry Hill High Street. Their father had a pub in Douglas, IOM. It's been mentioned on here before. Is that how you knew? come on Si,give me the full details, year of birth and place of birth

Hi Chris, thanks in advance for your help. He was called Frederick Firth Glendenning, born c.1877 in Hunslet. Father Bethel, mother Sarah (nee Firth,) living at 9 Branston Terrace in 1901. Before this, he will have lived at The Boot and Shoe on Richmond Street, Bank. I'm told he also ran a pub, like his father, grandfather and uncle. He played rugby union for Morley and Yorkshire. He died in 1934, and is buried with his wife and youngest son in New Wortley Cemetery.Cheers.

Thanks very much, Mick. I'm told he definately ran a pub, but I can't find it, either.Cheers,SiPS The reference to Stapleton Grove, Bramley is interesting. The Stapletons were in New Wortley, in front of Armley Gaol. His son (my grandfather) lived there, and Fred's last home was in the Avenues (where my dad was born.)

Si.all licensees had to apply to the Licencing magistrates to get their Licence.Records of these should be in the archives.I am not sure whether they are at Leeds or Wakefield (as the county town) but a look through these should tell you if your ancester was a licensee and which pub assuming you know the rough time period you want.I miss being a licencing magistrate in Wakefield.i used to know all the good (and bad) pubs, restaurants and clubs. Some restaurants that looked great out front ,you wouldn't touch with a bargepole once you had seen behind the scenes(no names for fear of litigation!).
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!
