Before Thorntons Arcade on the 1847 map the pubs in the yards on the left of Briggate from Commercial street northwards went Pack Horse, William IV, Leopard, wheatsheaf, Angel, ship, rose and crown then the Talbot which looks like it went for Thornton's arcade.Three of those still stand up those yards, and of course many a seceret Leedser has been in!!Looks like the leopard and WilliamIV went for albion place and the wheatsheaf went too by 1906.Looks like the Rose and crown went, but another pub sprang up accessed from the Queens arcade half way up on the right from Briggate, half way down on the left from Lands lane.Best guess - In the Queens Arcade - anyone in town to have a look in passing??

Well this is a mystery and no mistake!!!Like the person who put up the caption on Leodis I am stumped!I can name the pubs on Briggate now and in the past pretty much of the top of my head (20 +if pushed ) but no White Bear. And whilst I would never say 'never' I'm struggling to think of a White Bear anywhere in Leeds in the past 100 years. There was a White Bear on Kirkgate, but that disappears from Directories after1809!The only other ones I can think of around Leeds -are on Leeds Road Bradford (now derelict and boarded up like most pubs on Leeds Road) and of course at Tingley.Tingley actually had 2 nearby pubs - the 'Old White Bear' and the 'New White Bear' - the latter survives and has dropped the 'New' part of its name.I wonder if things are as simple as they appear in the photo though? The picture doesn't actually show a pub - only a sign with the name on it - I wonder if it might be some sort of a 'cab stop' or similar to catch transport to a 'White Bear' pub somewhere - possibly Tingley???

Is it just an advert on the gas lamp and not actually a pub on Briggate, perhaps some small print not visible?

I notice that the 'Last Orders' in Morley has been refurbished and is now the 'Royal' . I assume this is a (very sensible) reversion to a previous name - can anyone with better knowledge of Morley than I confirm this?

The Queens arcade directory for the time lists the "Queens arcade Hotel" in the arcade. That is in 1906.Some of the pubs up Briggate held dual names and I still think that this may be the "White Bear" by 1910.

On the left side of the road going northwards.a tiny bit up and you can see the glass roof of the arcade. Queens arcade hotel run by Thomas Render Graham a.k.a. the white bear. That's what and where it was until someone can knock this down!!!!

Apparently the Duck and Drakes re-opening on Friday evening (was talking to one of the staff on the way home last night). Hopefully it won't change much!Sorry if I sound a bit obsessed like...

(BTW, there's a White Bear in Idle, too.)The drawing is definately a bear, isn't it?
