Whether he was inspired by us or by the pub's name we never quite worked out, although the trad revival WAS in full flush at the time. Can't find a pub of that name on the Tadcaster Road now. Does anyone know if it still exists under a new name, or if its been demolished? I confess I have no idea what the area is like now - maybe it's vanished under a motorway? The Wild Man was a John Smiths pub. The building is still there but it's now a curry house now - a branch of the Aagrah chain. Probably has been for 10 years or so now.I once went in when it was still a pub (early 90's?) and we were the only people in there - I guess the drink driving laws and lack of passing trade did for it as a pub.

4 flats?! Bus stop immediately outside! That was never a plus in my day.

Thanks RaveyDavey for the info on The Wild Man. I'm impressed that you remember a John Smith's house you were in once over 10 years ago that was empty at the time. Phenomenal memory! I found this pic of it on the Aaghra website and it brought back some happy memories. Many thanks.

I have fabulous happy memories of The Wild Man - we used to hire a car in Otley and go there regularly on Saturdays. there was a wonderful group of "Teddy" lads called The Rockerfellas and their music was great - one of their favourite regular numbers was "I'm 'ennery the eighth I am." which the rotund lead singer used to belt out with gusto. Happy happy times - wish I could go there tomorrow
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I called into the fairway pub earlier to check on a few mates but Jesus was i not expecting what i saw??It seems that the place as been reinvented as the Hayfield with the car park now full of yardies and low life's peddling there waresI only walked across the car park and i got offered drugs on FIVE occasions!!!!!!!!!!So i dont think it will be long before we see the dreaded steel shutters of death on this once fine little pub.Dont get me wrong the place was packed out to the rafters(for all the wrong reasons lol)it wont close because of lack of customers it will get CLOSED down by the police.

Happy happy times - wish I could go there tomorrow I think that after the Wild Man closed in the 70's it became Dick Turpin's.We had a trip there from our street about 12 of us and the theme was 18thcentury food and a troupe of actors delivered rude and raunchy verses and songs! In between we ate food from that era ,the food was terrible but we had a really good night. The week after we went the place got closed down by the enviromental health people! They found rat and mouse droppings all over the kitchen! It's a wonder we weren't all ill!
