Here's the little fire starter from my collection. If i remember correctly some guy from Russia who is an expert on Match box collection got in touch with Rik & he reckons this is a real gem as they stopped using that form of the IMP a long time ago..

I've been studying this brilliant old sign - and like many old ones its a 'palimpsest' (great word) i.e. one sign over another. The topmost sign is the yellow rectangle that ends before the window, the red matchbox, Puck himself and the green shadows cast by Puck and the box. But if you look closely you can see an older , slightly larger sign underneath this one...At top left is "..est" possibly "the best"?Slightly lower you can make out " BRITISH ..TCH" which presumably says British match. Fainter still the next line says "BRITISH HOMES"I would guess the word 'for' was somewhere between these lines.Next look just to right of the satellite dish . the large dark crescent is part of a large'P' next a very faint 'U' then a 'C' just to the right of Puck's Head - this quite easy to make out. finally a 'K' just by the window.(the word 'PUCK' seems to be in the same style as on the match-box on the newer sign)Next line "MATCHES"lastly what obviously said "BRYANT & MAY" at the bottom is part of this older sign.So to recap I believe the original sign read something like"the bestBRITISH MATCHforBRITISH HOMESPUCKMATCHESBRYANT & MAY"

The old "L.I.C.S" - I suppose the beehive(allegory of 'industry') was the Victorian equivalent of a "logo"

Another L.I.C.S sign - not quite as grand as this one's painted. A different 'logo' this time too - its a millstone with the legend 'For the good of all' above it.
