Queens Hotel

Hi, I spotted this poster last weekend on an impromptu trip to the Embsay steam railway, a poster advertising the Midland Railway's hotels, including the previous design of Queens Hotel.http://patter.mine.nu/midland%20hotels.jpgPity the picture's really blown out. I've corrected it a bit but there's too much data missing.

What an absolutely beautiful and nostalgic poster for sure. I take it that the Bradford Hotel shown in the one which is now the Pennington/Midland ??

Don't know too much about Bradford, though I was brought up there till the family emigrated to the sunny delights of Scarborough, but with a little googling ..."The Midland Hotel, Bradford was built between 1885 and 1890 by the Midland Railway Company. The Midland Hotel, Bradford was a showpiece for the railway companies northern operations, and is of particular architectural interest, with some of the finest Victorian interiors in the city. "-- thats the Midland Hotel on Forster Square, so I guess the earlier Forster Square station must have looked superb. I'm a little surprised that the Metropole in Leeds wasn't a Midland hotel, it seems to have their pre-1900 style (in comparison with the Midland in Manchester).

Is this right? I thought the Queen's , being attached to City Station would have come under LNER or one of it's forerunners - whereas LMS was central Station so this drawing could be the Metropole or Wellesley???

Well the current station is a combination of the LMS & LNER stations, with Queens probably being on the LMS side. Queens Hotel has a few LMS crests on the front.and here's one I saw earlier - http://patter.me.uk/snowview/view/dscf1999.jpg

I think the Queens was operated by the LMS - it was in the area of Leeds City run by them. I may be wrong, but I think the Wellesley on Wellington Street used to be the Great Northern (LNER)

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER A GUY THROWING HIMSELF OFF THE QUEENS ONTO A PARKED CAR...SEEM TO HAVE VAGUE MEMORIES OF THIS??....'ARRY!!!

Yes definitely Wiggy, although I think it was a car leaving the station forecourt and approaching the "underpass" beneath the hotel bedrooms before reaching City Square - but may be wrong. In any event someone was killed - but was it the unfortunate car driver ?? Can anyone else remember for certain ?
