The cinema was opened in 1912 and was called 'Bramley Picture Palace' until it changed to the 'Lido' in 1931. last film shown was on 08/03/1961 - 'The Nudist Story' !I believe it was invariably called the 'Bug Hutch' . You can just make out a remarkable structure on the right hand side of the building - a staircase up to the projection room - by way of a fire escape.     Wasn't JanCee banned from the site long ago when it used to be policed? I don't know why, I was new here myself at the time. Wasnt it the infamous Scandy Bramley vs phil d debate? well i say debate it was more of a one sided insult aimed at phill, and then Jan cee jumped on board. To tell you the truth from my recollection she wasnt banned it was more of "im taking my ball home"sort of situ lol BEST LEAVE THAT ONE ALONE METHINKS....WE DON'T WANT TO FALL OUT ALL OVER AGAIN ....DO WE??...HANG ON...YOU MEAN IT'S NOT POLICED ANYMORE? DOES THAT MEAN I CAN SAY ''@#%XX$£%&***+@#''?
i do believe, induced by potent circumstances, that thou art' mine enemy?

Cottage Road - not lost but working!I went to the Cottage Road last night for their special showing of The Third Man. It was a great night out and they were sold out. A collection of old and nostaligic adverts to start, a cracking black and white film (look at those sewers!) and an proper interval with an ice cream. The film even jammed and melted at one point! They do a 'special' every six to eight weeks. Next up a Bette Davis or an old musical. They've also got some good new films coming up.

The operating instructions were signed personallyby John Logie Baird (No relation to Yogi!),so you could tellit was real state of the art!!!Anyway, whilst holding the indoor aerial, and stood on a chairin the corner . everyone watching (half thestreet!),gave a gasp and said,'Look! all the fishes (Tunny)are suddenly swimming diagonally upward!" Next minuteblack zigzag lines blotted out the screen, and black and bluezigzag smoke,to match, issued from behind the 'Box'!Evacuate now! and two stalwarts grabbed the machineand despatched it thru the back door, which was open, just in case!Ah well! It was back to 'Saturday Night on the Light' on steam wireless for a week or so till Radio Rentals started doing Teles!(Two bob a week for the rest of your life!),Passing neighbours used to remark,'OOOH Look!,Arry's got TVin the garden as well! 'Not much of a picture, though!' Hi arryawk first telly we had was about nineteenfifty eight about the size of a tea chest had valves of course but with a bit of know how you could work on them not like now any problem now and its take out the whole board and put in a new one. Our first telly came from Currys, who had a shop on Vicar Lane about where Maturis is now. It cost if I remember correctly 89 guineas mind not your common or garden pounds. It was an Ecko and was supposed to be able to pick up "commercial TV" when it started. People in certain areas of Morley could get some sort of a picture from the Lancashire transmitter before Emley Moor opened, but we waited until it had - and then needed a special aerial. In those days the commercials seemed much more entertaining than they do today - some of them were better than the programmes!

Just in passing, I THINK that the Ecko brand name was derived from the name of the manufacturer - E.C.Kole. Other wonderful names from the past :-KB - Kolster Brandes.Murphy.Ferguson ("Fine sets these Fergusons")Cossor.PyePhilips         and many many more. The Cottage Road is a great little cinema, as is the Hyde Park Picture House.I went last year (on the recommendation of my Belgian friends) to Cottage Road to see "IN BRUGES." A very violent film full of excessively obscene language - but a gripping thriller story and magnificently filmed in lovely Bruges. I'd go again tomorrow if it returned.

our first TV was a Televue it stood on the floor and cost 88 guineasHow much would that be today? We too were told that it would be able to receive commercial tele but I think before it got to that we were not able to get the valves for it anymore. Our local cinema was the Lyric on Tong Rd Armley my nana used to take me to see 'singing and dancing films' and grandad would take me to see any Charlie Chaplin seasons. Think I saw Peter Pan at the Majestic when it came out with auntie Phil' and saw the King and I at the Odeon both were in the centre of Leeds , are they still there?

We've got a Sony Trinitron 14"ish colour telly, circa 1973, and it still works perfectly. It has a wooden (teak?) outer casing, and to switch on, there's a pull-out knob. To change stations, you turn a tuning wheel.

No - The Majestic is now the Majestyk Night-club whilst the Odeon is now a Primark!
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

There was an article in the Evening Post recently about the former Majestyck, A planning application was recently turned down to turn the building into a Casino and entertainments complex, Ironically the same group that ran the nightclub until nearly 3 years a go when it shut down. They are going to submit a new application very soon, It would be nice if they could restore the building externally aswell as internally to something like its original incarnation, a condition which I believe is stipulated in any future plans.
