It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

If you go back to your original post, there's a little + and paperclip next to the posting time - click on that, it lets you go back and add an attachment rather than having to repeat everything - keep trying, we'll keep the brush and dust-pan handy for any mess-ups!

Hunslet was the engine maker to the world. If you're ever down that way, the Middleton Railway have a fascinating section on all the companies that were involved in the production of engines that reached every continent. Sadly they're all gone now, but if you know where to look, there are many signs of Hunslets glorious industrial past still visible today. I think there was a thread on here about it at one point.

The Challenger 33 was originally made in Leeds. Fowler subsequently merged with Marshalls of Gainsborough and production moved there, but the machines were originally built at Fowlers in Hunslet Until they had their own operation at Stanningleyhttp://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messages.aspx ... 074Fowlers were also agents for J I Case of Racine Wisonsin

Nearly every loco i saw at Embsay (except diesels) were Hunslet engines.
