I wonder if that has anything to do with Tesco announcing plans for yet another huge "eco-friendly" superstore just up the road at the site of the former bus garage?Having read that article in the YEP, I was reminded by the accompanying photo of just how huge the Miggi Arms is inside - and how many people they must need through the doors to fill it!

The "Old Golden Fleece" (middle oyl) Churwell appears to definitely have closed - there are metal shutters covering all the windows.

Loiner in Cyprus wrote: I don't make many comments here on SL, but read the comments of others every day, but I feel the need to empty my spleen finally on this subject. When I was a lad, in the 60s, a night out was a few pints of Tets/JS/BYB/Hemmingways/Sams/TT /Websters etc (didn't have a pint of Theakstons until the 70s) then to either the Capitol Ballroom or either the old or new Mecca or Majestic to pull. I remember the Hofbrau house opening and trying the 'German' beer and thinking it would never take over from proper drink. I never thought Euro P@ss would take over from a proper mans' drink as it has done in the UK. Having worked extensively in across Europe I find it amusing that the Bavarians regard Leurvenbrau and Hofbrau as a biers brewed for tourists and export. ie they don't like it. Their excellent biers eg Schneider Weiss etc they keep to themselves. Is it a sign of consumerism fads and marketing exploitation that the UK younger generations over the last 20/30 years have gone for this, in my opinion, inferior export from other countries. I still believe there is nothing to beat a really good pint of bitter. Unfortunately, over the last 20/30 years the opportunities for the younger generation to be weened and sample good ale has been dissipated under the barrage of marketing for Euro P@ss (and alco pops, but that is another vent) . Incidently, most Bavarians still drink Bavarian bier, the only exception being Guiness which I can understand. Here in Cyprus the same scenario is being enacted. The traditional taverna of only 5 to 10 years ago serving Keo beer, local wine and sivania, is being replaced, enveloped and devoured by marketing by Bistros selling [edited for content] Euro P@ss from 'Germania' etc, over inflated French and third world wines and Macdonalds. Is the demise of the 'traditional' English bitter in a 'traditional' smokey English pub, that doesn't sell food or have a pool table, the paradigm that the Cypriat Taverna, German bier haus, french Bistro will all succumb to?? I'm pleased I lived in the era I did.     It's true what you say about Bavaria. I was in a little village called Schlusselfeld (think that's right) it was only about as big as Gildersome and it had 5 breweries all brewing 2/3 different types of beer - my favourite is Dunkel which is a dark lager. The stuff sold in this country as "lager" is a disgrace. It beats me how they've achieved such a massive sale for something which at best tastes (and smells) vaguely of urine.

The metal shutters have appeared at the Sycamore in Morley, one of the best pubs in the town not too long ago, so that's 3 town centre pubs that have bitten the dust in the last 3 years, the others being the Albion (not quite town centre) and the Brunswick.

From tonights Evening Post..."The Courtyard, on Cookridge Street in the city centre, is due to close on May 3, managers have confirmed."However there are plans in place to re-open as a somewhat poncified sounding venue, by the clever folks from that there London...http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... 5150267.jp

Wasn't it the Courtyard that refused to let some members of a hen party in because they were too old? Maybe they would have surrvived if they weren't so discriminating. Haven't been in for a few years because I thought it was too poncified already!

Not quite a pub but I've been for a walk around Otley and Wharfed Ales is shut. I never got a chance to go in, but that's probably contributory.

I'm not suprised. The Sycamore (Seccy) used to be renowned as the best pint in Morley (not hard) but they resorted to smooth, and the customers dwindled.I was in the Old Hall at Heckmondwike last Friday. Sam Smiths - decent pint - cheap too, no loud music, it was absolutely heaving. The new Inn at Gildersome is the same - again Sam Smiths, usually you've a job to find a seat.
