Overall the accents weren't anything like as bad as I'd feared though. Can anybody identify any of the locations? Where are the funny little houses "Paula" lived in? What about "Shangri-La", was that Mombasa or whatever it's called, out near Thorpe Audlin or somewhere, does anybody recognise where the exterior shots of "The Karachi Club" were done?We thought the skyline shot was probably a contemporary one that took an age to alter in post-production? yeah back and forth through the tunnels on york road, thats about it.
There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

The skyline was almost certainly done in post. Paula's house I thought might be in Cottingley as the estate would be the right period and there would be houses that abut the railway embankment. Having just flicked through the back of the book I've realised that it was altered enormously for the film, and not for the better, which is a bit disappointing.

I'd really love to know where it was all filmed - need to watch it again really and concentrate on the locations rather than the action! We wondered about that skyline shot too - there are great views over the city from near where I live in Beeston, but they're full of shiny new highrises now. I thought the Karachi club exteriors might have been in Bradford or Dewsbury - I can't think of many buildings like that in Leeds. And all those shots of the inner ring road tunnels - am I right in thinking that the X patterns on the walls were painted more recently than the 70s? Picky, moi?

If they're following the theme of the story the Karachi Club would have been somewhere around Wakefield - if you think about it the film was mostly set in south Leeds and Wakefield apart from the bits involving the Post and the Police. The Dawson character is presumably derived from the personality of Poulson (have to be careful about how you say that) and I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say that one of the themes of the books and films is corruption at County Hall, which was also in Wakefield. It could conceivably be in the Calder Valley. The externals of the York Road tunnel seem to have been shot on location although it looked a lot cleaner than it normally does, but you're probably right about the road markings. There's not much you can do with those though.

Ah, good point about the Wakefield connection - it's a while since I read the books and I've forgotten some of the detail. The second film focuses more on the Ripper enquiry, and that one really spooked me - I was in my late teens then and it brought back memories of what a scary place Leeds could be at that time.Agree about all the smoking too, Brandy - everyone seemed to be at it. Maybe that's why everything had a brownish tinge!

Although I didn’t watch it all [a more pressing appointment filleting tripe called me away] one location I did recognise was the kids coming out of the International Pool [t’olyimpics]. This would explain the mention made by, I think, PhilD some months ago when he said about having a scout around and had seen lots of lighting set up outside.

Don't know about that liits but there was filming in the car park for a day with old police cars and bikes. Not much in the way of lighting though - me thinks a budget production - they went all round the nearby buildings asking if they could plug there l o n g extension lead in somewhere. They drew a blank!

They drew a blank! Eleven million for all three I read somewhere, which is peanuts in modern film making. A lot of that was spent retraining Sean Bean to speak with a proper Yorkshire accent again.
