Leeds "Large Public Trench Air Raid Shelters"

The top photograph of the air raid bunker next to the prison is also still there. It has just had extensive repairs and partially filled in as it nearly collapsed last year. Massive hole in the side of it appeared one night.

There's also the one on Woodhouse Moor, on the right as you enter the park from the top of Brudenell Road. There's a pile of boulders blocking one of the entrances, but people have managed to get in, I believe.

Come to think of it... is there a reason that these shelters still exist? Maybe they can still be used in case of an attack?

I also think there was one situated on York Road, wher the playing field is now opposite the Shafetsbury.

You are quite correct there. The stones marking the feet of the entrances are still visible. The toilets were indeed made in the space of the shelters.The original shelters were probably over 500ft long. Give me a minute and I'll try to see how many bays they had. Most of them look to be still there.Looking at the documentary, physical and anecdotal evidence, there seem to be nearly 20 of these shelters extant around the city.

Im sure the last time we covered this one we came to the conclusion that the shelter was infact at the other side of the pitch(shown here in red)and the toilets position is marked by the blue cross.

Has anyone else notice how conveiniently placed most of those shelters are for the motorway / Inner Ring Road?
