Pubs closing NOW- in our time.

I think a function room with a dance floor, unless it is minimal size, could be considered a ball room although a little out of place because I agree with Mariners description of the clientele from my only two visits to the place (both Sunday lunchtime IIRC).I don't remember the Lion and Lamb but would suspect the Miggi Arms might be listed and therefore couldn't be demolished (didn't someone post a link to listed buildings not so long ago). If it is I can't see a Supermarket wanting to open with the limited refurbishments (particularly exterior) that they could make.Even if not listed I suspect there would be opposition with the Middleton District Centre just down the road (Iceland + one other supermarket) and the shopping area including a large convenience store bordering on small supermarket on the other side of the Circus. Would there also be the demand given the aforementioned MDC and Circus , Netto on Old Lane a mile away and Aldi just a little further at the Shopping Park adjacent to M621 junction 1 on the Ring Road.

Thanks Ads, maybe it should be Leodis has a couple of photos one B&W and undated this http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... 426028from 2005. Both say it opened as a Hotel in 1925 with a Ballroom. It also doubled as a Catholic Church for 4 years (well mass was held there for that period).

Whilst the clientel of the Arms may be considered by some as a little on the rough side, if you close it, then where do all the customers go? I remember the police closing the Eagle on Torre Road because of the trouble they had in there (I was involved in pub watch group for that area - Police & Licencees), then pleading for it to be reopened because they dispersed the trouble into half a dozen pubs around the area. Better with one rough pub where you know the trouble will be, than spreading it around the area. In a lot of cases these 'rough' pubs are self policing anyway.The Middleton arms has a large function room upstairs, a tap style bar, a posh (Salamanca Room) where they used to do food and a large bar where they used to do discos and the like.
