tyke bhoy wrote: The footprint is bigger than your proposed Sovereign Street footprint and becomes roughly comparable if you include the Qpark multi storey which houses Bibis Criterion. Don't forget the boundaries areL ovell Park Road to LIRR, LIRR, Claypit Lane to Yorkshire Bank, then down Brunswick Terrace to what was the Londoner (now opal 3). If a multi storey was attached to the arena as at MEN it coould have parking. Both the bus station and the station are just over 10 minutes walk but a bus stop on a major route will be nearly 5 minutes walk. Crikey youre right about the size, its odd because the Briunswick buildings are still there,so it takes away a lot of the visible potential footprint.Im still not convinced about access to the site though.Ease of access and egress is so important.i hope that the site has had some serious appraisal of this and that the necessary measures to improve this are taken into account.Anyway, cant wait for 2012,i can go see Purple without going to another city.

Does that mean they are pulling down the Brunswick building? That's a shame as it is one of the better looking concrete buildings imho.

I would think so,its empty. Also the YEP says that the council will be buying the Leeds Met owned land,as predicted by Tyke Bhoy and his crystal ball. The council say that they will build the arena, not a developer,so perhaps the money they will save in not having a developer will mean the arena will not be skimped on.I fell better now,not so pessimistic.I wonder if we as citizens will have some say on the arena and its facilities,i know that the Liverpool Echo is lacking in entry points, which is causing big delays getting in.Perhaps members of the council should take a trip to the various arenas, see whats good and what isnt, and then base our arena on their collective strengths,or is that common sense?

Of course at that end of town it's up near the Grand Theatre/millenium square/met uni venue so they can call it the 'live arts quarter' or something else with 'quarter' on the end.

Being as i am i sent a couple of emails to Andrew Carter about the arena and the site, mainly expressing the mooted concerns that have appeared on this and other threads. He has replied a couple of times, but below i copy todays message, thought you may be interested:-Thanks for your e-mail. You are right we do need to clear up any misapprehensions and misunderstanding there are about the traffic implications for the arena. It is interesting, however, that last Thursday night, when Leeds Christmas Lights were switched, on I am told there were about 36,000 present. About 3 times the capacity of the proposed arena and there was certainly no gridlock. What we are going to be spelling out in the next few weeks is the sort of arrangements that would obviously have to be put in place to get people to the arena by more modes of transport that just a private car. Although what needs to be remembered is that the bus station and the railway station are only a 10 minute walk from the proposed site, that virtually every city centre car park, not just Woodhouse Lane and the Merrion Centre, are within easy walking distance and we would be looking at park and ride facilities at various locations to ensure the free movement of people and vehicles. I think I should also flag up that there do seem to be certain people, perhaps those that think the Council should have just passed over a gift wrapped development opportunity irrespective of cost to the private sector, who seem to want to discredit the site selection. They will not succeed. I do most certainly view your comments as positive and supportive. Please keep them coming. Best wishes.Councillor Andrew CarterLeader of the Conservative GroupDeputy Leader of the Council

Skyscraper city website has an arena thread. On here there has been a mention that possibly the arena could be more in the frame of a"Super Theatre".Apparently this was mooted at the announcement meeting last week. There is a planned arena in this "Super Theatre" style for Glasgow.attached are hopefully some pics.
