There was a large building at the end of Meynell and Newlay Streets (junction of Denison Street,) according to the 1908 OS map. It looks to be about the right place and distance. Don't know what it was, though. I'm assuming most of the "alphabets" had been demolished by then?

There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

I think he wanted to take the budgie home for the school holidays. He lost out to Barbara.I thought the church and gasometer may have been the same ones as in the previous photo'sYes Arry the alphabet streets had been knocked down by then. I remember they built a police station there on the diggins.

I lived in Rosebank Viewjust across Westfield Rd,up till 1947 when I joined up.Have youseen my piccies of the Rosebanks (Old and New)? I think they are still up on site!As regards that building on the diggings, It could have been asub contractor's (engineering shop) or I can still remember someof those buildings being used to make 'Off ration' sweets justafter the war. Illegal of course, and a bit unhygienic! but we didn'tcare. e-coli wasn't invented! A mouthful of fruity gobstoppers,(made out of fruit cordial and edible gum!)Heaven, to us spice starved kids!PS I was serving in Egypt and Iraq when that pic was taken!

However, it isn't marked as one on the 1908 map, but then again, some others aren't either (Rising Sun, Albion, etc - Cardigan Arms is.) I've tried looking on Leodis for Newlay and Meynell Streets without any luck. Have you tried Denison Street? It ran along the top of the alphabets, and it looks like the building may have fronted onto it.

The Marc Riboud picture with the cricket match is indeed Little London. The street was Victoria Place and the street opposite was Glover Street. This would be approximately where Carlton Hill crosses Oatland Lane these days.As for the picture of Daver's budgie, all I can do is agree that St Simon's is the church and the building opposite must almost certainly be at the top of Meynell or Newlay Street and it does look like a pub. The north side of Denison Street and Christopher Street which ran parallel have gone. I worked on Ventnor Street when I left school in 1965 and St Simon's had gone by then.

This'll be a challenge for Drapesy. In my 1911 Kelly's Directory, 35 Denison Street, which is at the top of Meynell Street and Newlay Street; is marked as occupied by John Haldenby, beer retailer. It's not in the list of public houses but in the list of beer retailers, it's marked as also brewing the beer they sell.So the building in the picture is almost certainly the same and by the 1950s would have become a pub.But what was it called?I can't make out the sign but under the biggest magnification I can manage before it all turns to dots the swinging sign looks a bit like a shield.
