Seems to be quite a lot of restocking / admin etc work involved for 2 or 3 coppers per day. They were generally owned by the companies whose product they vended, and someone would be employed to do a 'round' to make sure that they were maintained and filled. A lot of these machines, particularly those attached to the walls of shops, survived for a long time because they weren't the property of the shop, and still technically belonged to W.H. Wills in the case of the once-ubiquitous Woodbine machine. There could be our next search - are there still any wall mounted cigarette or chocolate machines extant on the streets of Leeds?

Hi simong Dont forget the chewing gum machines i think it was xp chewing gum that had an arrow on the knob at the side when it got to quarterpast you got two for your penny. We spent hours walking round to find one that was going to drop two for one penny.I must say there were plenty of the machines about.

I think it was XL chewing gum that had the arrow. There was also Beech Nut that didn't have an arrow.
