Anybody know anything about the traffic census that wrecked my journey to and from work today. I suppose it wouldn't work on a Sunday or out of rush hours but given the route is already disrupted with diversions due to two major road builds (one of which is behind schedule) and other sabotage (aka roadworks) they might have had more consideration.

You do sometimes wonder - recently Woodhouse lane closed at the Merrion Centre for long gas works, traffic diverted down Merrion Street to use North Street to laeve town , and Merrion Street then reduced from three to one lane for a couple of weeks. Perhaps the various parties involved might be encouraged to talk to each other. Before the event!

There were people in the railway station handing out questionnaires today, it's probably related. The net result will be 'ooh, isn't there a lot of traffic?'

Saw one taking place on the M621 slip road, from A6110/Geldard Road. This was during rush hour,i think it was Monday or Tuesday. What on earth are these people doing? What the hell do they ask?I think its an excuse to give vehicles the once over as theres always police on hand.

I got caught in one on the way to work t'other day. The newspaper said that they carried out an indepth questionaire about our traffic habbits. Rubbish. All they did was ask wher I had been and where I was going.

I was stopped by the traffic census last week on Spen Lane. They just gave me a postage-paid form to fill in at my leisure. Apparently, it's for the "convenience" of the motorist.

Apparently, correct me if i'm wrong, it's illeagal not to stop if a Police man flags you down but it's not illeagal to refuse to carry out the census. Why don't we all just refuse to do the damn thing and get the traffic moving again ?

That is why a Police officer is present - you must stop for an officer in uniform - but the census people alone can't make you, nor if you so wish, answer their questions. Wonder who's liable if you're late for work and get your pay docked (or have to make up the time!)

This is allegedly a "Metro" census to "provide better public transport". I've been stopped twice. They've already done Pudsey, Bramley, Kirkstall and Spen Lane at West Park that I know of.Only thing though, I feel it may be a nationwide census as a friend has told me they are doing the same in Hull/Beverley and another friend suggests they've started in Newcastle. Perhaps its for a new stealth tax for motorists or an advance survey before road pricing (OMG). I was given the survey cards to complete at home rather than delay traffic - haven't done them yet. Will probably just put them in the green bin.Don't get me wrong, I'm all for reducing emissions but cannot get a bus from where I live that would get me to work on time and it would also take 4 times as long. I don't work regular hours and need to transport lots of books and marking to and from school.
