We got some a week or so back 5 minsafter they opened and got Re-fries,I think! Batter waslike leather and fish frizzled at the ends, when we got home, and it was running with fat.Anyway, all the other f&c from there have been 1st class! They seem to have been having a little burst of expansion in the last couple of years. There's also one in Greengates in Bradford but the one that used to be on New Road Side in Horsforth has changed its name. I'm quite surprised that they haven't tried to move in here in Yeadon, but as we've got seven chippies in town all ready it might be a bit of a tight squeeze! Isn't there one in Yeadon that says it's the oldest chippy in Yorkshire?

The Little Fisherman a bit further down the High Street is my local and is a proper old 'hole in the wall' chippy, and indeed Fountains across from Billy's is pretty good. The oldest chippy is off the left of The Steep at the bottom of the High Street but is only open during the day usually - like any good chippy it closes at 6pm, as everyone should have had their tea by then!Westfields on Guiseley Road has won awards in recent years although I've not been impressed when I've been there but it's probably a matter of taste.

Have mentioned most of these in earlier postings! The Westfield used to be first class but changed handsmebbe two yrs ago and after trying it twice, decided todrive by!. Smelled of cats and old tatie peelings! There was a squabble among the new staff and they appeared in courtfor fighting!(NO thanks!). If anyone has been in the last month or so and found it OK,please indicate on here? Ta!Didn't get as far as Murgies today as it started raining while on the bus so we dropped off in Horsforth and went to the Toby Carvery!Excellent value. all you can eat plus an icecream sundae for £5!Had a pint of Marston's Pedicure(!), hand pulled and gorgeous! That was extra,of course! I didn't find Murgie's anything like a MacD's last time!. If they'd served it in a paperbag and polystyrene cups,I'd have chuckedit back at 'em!. Perhaps you refered to the take-away side.?The waitress we had was around 18 and knew her stuff, so nocomplaints there! She got a 'tip' too!(Look bothways whencrossing the road!LOL)The Fountain chippie opposite, I know is very good from reports, and we intended to go there that time but the restaurantis only open weekends!

Quite a few chippies in Beeston have disappeared too. There was a really good one at the bottom of Sunbeam Avenue, off Lodge Lane, called (surprise ,surprise) Sunbeam Fisheries. On Lodge lane itself, not far from The Holy Spirit Church was another chippy. Can't remember the blokes name, but think the chippy was called after him, ('Jim's ?)but he had the shop for ages, a really big friendly chap. They were the best F&CH around and cost one shillings & eightpence when I was young! There was also one near the top of Sunbeam Avenue, just around the corner, on Greenmount Street I think. His fish were nice but the batter was a bit soggy. It was next door to a paper shop run by Dave Cochrane, an ex Leeds Untited Player. (Another idea for a thread!)In the 1950's further down Greenmount Street there was a pie & pea shop were you could take a jug in & get it filled with pale green watery peas. You could also eat in, on a small narrow shelf, but a bowl of peas worked out a bit more than our sparse pocket money allowed. They tasted lovely with onions & mint sauce, nothing like the artificial green mushy peas you get today.Went I went to visit relations in Hull there were lots of F&Ch shops, with lovely fresh fish caught that day(I think!!) What we called fishcakes in Leeds -fish sandwiched between 2 slices of potato & battered, became fish patties in Hull. Sometimes we ordered fish patties & got minced up fish, potato & parsley cakes in batter.I do agree that London F&Ch are the worst. It's mainly dogfish with the skin left on & loads of bones in, & they look at you daft if you ask them to skin them first. One puzzling question- why do they always put the prices up when new potatoes come on the scene, but never reduce them when the price of spuds drops back down?

Has anyone mentioned the Skyliner, on the front of Seacroft Centre (or was it the back?), which later became the Seafarer? They used to have a proper sit down restaurant to the side of the chippy.Never brilliant F&Cs but always OK - not to be confused with the other Skyliner at Austhorpe that is still there and does cracking F&Cs. There was also briefly a F&C van that used to visit Seacroft on a regular basis, parking up near the library. Also on this side of town were Pendas Fisheries (now a chinese takeaway) on Pendas Way who were always good value. I'm fairly sure that there was another chippy which was also briefly called Seafarer at Crossgates, opposite the station which is now one of those "we do everything, none of it well" takeaways. There was also one on the parade of shops near the old 56 terminus in Swarcliffe, which was bloody awful the only time we visited.

Personally I think you'd go a long way to beat Murgatroyds Restaurant - beautiful F & C, polite and smart staff always, as spotlessly clean everywhere as any operrating theatre and beautifully furnished.Us oldies always have the Senior Citizen Special (up to 8.00pm)'OK, its recently gone up to £7.95 but :-Fabulous soup or fruit juiceGenerous size fish nicely cooked in light dry batter.New potatoes if you don't want chips.Beans if you don't want peas.Brown or white or mixed bread with decent butter.Huge choice of lovely sponge puddings with fabulous custard, or crumble, or ice cream.Generous teapot (two cups or more of decent stuff)Very efficient service, but no rush - take as long as you like in comfort.Very happy with Murgy's Restaurant ta !! BUT I have to agree with others that the take away is just the opposite - only used it two or three times but found it to be poor service and grotty goods - the comparison above with McDonalds is a good one. Its very strange under the same roof and management isn't it ??
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Good man Blakey!I agree abt Murgie's service, and it sounds as I remember, a few months back! As I said,a couple of days ago, we were onour way to renew acquaintances(!) but the rain on the bus windscreen prompted us to get off in 'Ossfuth and we wentin the Toby Carvery (ex.'11thEarl!') and we really enjoyedthe meal.Just happened we had a ticket cut out of Saga mag'Carvery meal and Free Icecream sundae' for a fiver.Any road up,we shall aim for Murg's next week again! Thanks for the backup Blakey! By the way,you didn't havea driver called Butler in your bus Company, did you? LOL! ps; If I want a takeway I'll give that one a miss and tryThe Fountain opposite!
