I never went in, mind, but I can remember it being opposite the LA Bowl - which is now also gone, completely flattened and the site cleared. There is an article in the YEP tonight that the near legendary Josephs Well is also closed. Apparently the licencee simply had enough and shut up shop! The owners (Enterprise Inns - again - is this merely co-incidence?) say the reopening is "imminent", but we shall see. It's as if these big pub co's are buying these pub estates so that they can run them into the ground and then sell the land off, or am I being too cynical ?

The trouble is that the vast majority of pubs are now owned by a handful of "pub companies" - many of the trading under several "brand" names. They set the rent that the licencee pays, but also dicatate what is stocked and what prices are charged. It does smack of big companies, run by accountants, interested only in the bottom line doesn't it? Don't forget that those pubs (prperty and land) amke up many of their assetts, so if property prices slip, so do the books. There is nothing wrong with making a profit of course, but something is wrong somewhere.

I used to go in lots of Sam Smith pubs with my dad as he worked for an electrical contractor that did the stuff in Sams pubs, many people don't like Sam Smith pubs but they are basically what pubs were like in the past, one pub selling only its own beer, no music or TV and only a pool table or slot machine. But the beer is mega cheap and if you go in the Duncan or General Elliott they are always busy!!! Also The Angel is a Sams place and that is always busy too fair enough the people in the Dunc and Elliott may not be to everyones taste but whenever I go in they are always friendly and salt of the earth types like old blokes that can tell a good story, pubs should be like this not empty holes with no soul arty farty places with no hand pulled ale and sky high prices!!!
Short in arm and long in pocket, been a long time but I am making a re-appearance!!!!

We had many good times with then the owner Rodney Fairburn. No, it was demolished about 15 -20 years ago and there is a 'McDonalds' on the site now. Hunslet Nelson C.C. survived, moving to a ground in Beeston off Gipsy lane , near the Ring Road.
